This Is the First Picture Ever Taken From Space—and It Was Taken From a Nazi Rocket

This grainy picture was taken on October 24, 1946, almost 14 months after the end of World War II and almost 11 years before the Sputnik launch. It was taken by American military engineers and scientists, using a Nazi rocket launched from the White Sands Missile Range, in New Mexico.

Cool pics, not a Nazi rocket though, a German made rocket used by the Americans after the war would be more accurate (unless the guys who launched it in 1946 were Nazis )

Since the V-2 was incapable of reaching "space" as then defined by the International Standards, the proper name might be the "first photo showing the curvature of the earth". Just a thought.

Why not in color? '-'

 

Colour film was
1) Not widely available in 1946
2) Expensive to purchase
3) Took more time to develop, and at greater cost
4) Colour images fade faster

As a technical record; you want the image to last; you take Black and White photography. This was true for a long time.

OR:

The world had no colour in 1946. All the colour had been destroyed by the Nazis, and the Americans hadn't yet managed to send out all the Aid workers with their crayons and paints.

 

I just ask this, because there was a famous phrase of Gagarin "the earth was blue". =P

 

I did some research on this. The guy sitting on the tip of the V-2 rocket did have a color camera with him, but mission planners unfortunately overlooked the fact he was totaly colorblind. This issue was corrected in laters mission which is why we now have full color photos of our planet from space.

 

Huh? His colour blindness wouldnt have stopped him seeing colour or taking pictures with the camera though..?
There could have been radiation issues...weight issues (doubtful)..Black and white last longer and are better for picking up detail...

Colour blindness doesnt make a person see in black and white just not see certain colours and falsifies one colour for another...

 

Two things.

1) I make a post about a "guy sitting on the tip of the V-2 rocket" travelling through the vaccum of space while taking photos of Earth, and you decide to nitpick the section about the color vision of said person? I like your style!

2) Since you dediced to nitpic sarcarm, I'll nitpic your attempt at techincal rationalization. I stated the photographer was "totaly colorblind" which means, by definition, he cannot see any color. Some people with partial color blindness see fewer colors in their visual spectrum than others, but they do not see the same # of colors as non-color blind person with some sort of cross-wiring to different colors. Go google it I guess.

Not nit picking mate, your post simply doesnt make sense...what difference does it make if HE is colour blind? He takes the colour photo and OTHER people see it in colour...His sight has nothing to do with it other than he can line the sight up and press the button. Comnplete colour blindness is extremely rare...google it i suppose.
