I am glad that I could help you --it was a littlebit difficult to find out the city he was talking about, because he was using an abbreviation. But this is something normal when you write a postcard, right? So I only have to think about which city I would write by using an abbreviation
Especially moving, as the man must have felt powerless, hearing the bombers over his head a few hours before they reached the targets. He wrote this card the very next morning after the bombings. This makes me think he had a connexion with either the Luftwaffe or a Funk unit, considering he knew about the target almost instantly whereas action took place hundreds of miles to the east.
Hello Skipper - well, there´s a little mistake in your interpretation: the writer of this card heard about the air-attack on Stuttgart on 06th of september! He wasn´t certain if his relativs were okay, but he hoped so... 11 days later (after the attack on Stuttgart) he wrote the card, so he need no connection with the Luftwaffe or a Funk unit ... but now I very certain that the writer is talking about Stuttgart ( I would use the abbreviation ... ) ... I am only sorry that I can´t tell you something about the names of the writer and the person he is sending the card ... his handwriting is too bad - (but it´s not Sütterlin)
My mistake I read 07-09-1943 , but it's indeed 17-09-1943. any hint about the name of the gentleman who this was addressed to?
Well, yes I have a suspission but I am not sure. The handwriting isn´t very clear, so it´s hard to say if my idea could lead us to the person who wrote the card. First I would like to know if there are any more informations about the card for me? If so, please tell me everything you know. I guess that the writer of this card was a german soldier who was stationed at Orleans in september 1943 - maybe his unit was there for being refreshed. But the guy and his unit was sent to the Eastern front later ... If we could find out which units were in Orleans at this time ....
I will have to do some research for that. I only have a few units for 1940 and figures for the Luftwaffe. (Bases were Bricy , Saran ) Bricy would be a Lehgeswchader base and Saran a secondary one with a large recycling unit to return used metal fro mwreckages to Germany (this place is near the railroad and at the crossing of major marshalling yards). As to the Wehrmacht there were many rotating (refrehing units) but also older veteran units and of course many attached to local security and repression. There was a large Soldatenheim on the central square just south of the station where nebies arrived and 2 km away there was a huge transit station with Schwester serving tea and sandwiches to transiting from anywhere (even the Legion Azul stopped there for a break) . On July 5th 6th, such a transit train was bombed by the Raf and about a hundred man from all units ran to a shelter only to be buried alive there . Locals found scattered personnal items in gardens, which included Shakespeare's work in German, a Kriegsmarine helmet , a luftwaffe fork and much more.... I have seen these mentionned object myself in private collections .
There´s a guy who will be registered as a missing soldier on the Eastern front later (1946) who could be the writer of this card - but it´s ONLY AN IDEA - because I am not able to identity his name by 100% ... but I am 100% certain about "Stuttgart"
