LUFTWAFFE ACES: List of Pilots with 100+ 'Kills' + Notes. Good Evening! B5N2Kate here and Tonight, as a service to the site files, I present to you this list of Luftwaffe Pilots with over 100 'kills' to their credit.....a few notes to begin, but basically this list will be added to as we go, for pilots with 50- 100 claims, and we will list, with your help, whether these pilots flew day or night, and the principle aircraft that these missions were flown in....but thats later, and another article away....for now, have a look at the list. If you find something that's not 'kosher', drop in and tell us! Thats what history, and particularly this website, is all about..... For you're information then...............enjoy, and I hope you find a use for this in some manner. The LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER ACES: Victory Scores......................from "The Lufwaffe Data Book" by Dr. Alfred Price Over the years there has been controversy, much of it ill informed, concerning the validity of German fighter aces victory claims. Major Erich Hartmann, top scorer in the Luftwaffe, is credited with 352 victories; 35 German pilots are credited with claim totals exceeding 150. On the other hand, Group Captain 'Johnny' Johnson, the RAF top-scorer in the late-war period is credited with 'only' 38 victories; Major Richard I. ('Bing') Bong the top-scoring U.S. Army Air-Force's pilot, is credited with 40, and Guards Colonel Ivan Kozhedub, the top-scoring Soviet pilot is credited with 62. If the German pilots victory claims are accurate, WHY was there such a great disparity in the claims of the different nations' pilots? Were the top-scoring fighter aces REALLY 8 or 9 times as good as those of Allied Air Forces? This author has no evidence that the top German fighter pilots were any better than their Allied counterparts. The main difference between them was that German pilots had greater opportunities to amass larger scores- if they survived long enough. During the early part of the war the Luftwaffe often went into action against opponents with inferior training and equipment, and these opponents suffered accordingly. The days of the 'easy' victories soon passed, however, and from the beginning of 1943 the Luftwaffe faced a hard fight on all fronts. To survive for any length of time against numerically superior enemy forces, a German pilot needed to be good......and he needed to be LUCKY. For those who knew their business, however, there were usually plenty of aircraft to pick off. Another important factor that assisted German pilots to amass large scores was that they did not fly limited 'tours' of combat duty like those in the RAF or the USAAF. Take the top scorer, Erich Hartmann, who joined JG-52 on the Eastern Front in October 1942. He flew on 'ops' almost continually from then until the end of the war, with only short breaks for leave. By the end of October 1943 his score had reached 148 and in March 1944 it passed the 200 mark. He flew more than 800 operational missions, an average of nearly one per day over a 2 and 1/2 year period, and on average gained a victory every 2.5 sorties. No British or American pilot was allowed to fly combat missions for such a long period without a break. At the peak of their scoring careers there were several Allied fighter pilots who achieved victories at the same rate as Hartmann. However, none did so for more than a few months before being sent on a 'rest' tour. Some writers have suggested that Dr. Goebbels propaganda service inflated the victory claims of individual pilots. This author has studied these claims in detail and can assert with confidence that this was NOT the case. The Germans were nothing if not good bureaucrats. Before a victory claim was 'confirmed' it underwent rigorous checking by the ABSCHUSSKOMMISSION (the Commission for Adjudication of Victory Claims). NO claim was even considered unless there was an independant witness of the action, or the wrecked enemy aircraft appeared to link with the claim. If the action took place over German-held territory and no wreck was found, a pilot would have considerable difficulty getting the victory confirmed. No credit was given for shared or probable victories. If more than one fighter had engaged the enemy aircraft shot down, the pilot judged to have played the major part in it's destruction recieved credit. That is not to say that EVERY German pilot's victory score was 100% accurate. The Abschusskommission was not perfect. Sometimes mistakes were made, and all air forces had some pilots who claimed dishonestly in action. But the German organisation was as effective as could be expected in time of war, and it was more thorough than ANY conterpart run by the Allies. To sum up, the German fighter pilot's victories were recorded as accurately as could be expected- and certainly more accurate than British or American counterparts. The German Pilot's scores were higher than those of other air forces because they had greater opportunities to achieve victories, and they spent much longer periods on front-line operations. B5N2Kate here again folks..............one thing WE CAN DO (which the original author did not), is to further divide this list into EASTERN FRONT,and WESTERN FRONT........IT IS a matter of historical record that pilots GENERALLY were NOT serving on both fronts. Galland in "The First and The Last" mentions experiments conducted by the Luftwaffe into giving Eastern pilots a 'go' at operations in the West, and what a disaster it was due to the differing operational and emotional conditions that prevailed on either front.....So the practice was DISCONTINUED and pilots became EITHER East or West front 'regulars'.Just for now, I'll give you the list as is, and then do a little research into this. Obvious ones like Galland (ALL 104 victories in the West) and Hartmann (all in East) will be easy to track....Other pilots not so..... Firstly, the colours this time mean..... Western pilots totals in BLUE, Eastern in RED, PURPLE will denote questionable totals based on soiled figures, or UNCLAIMED "kills" on the specific day. Gold for Condor Legion veterans notes with African and Mediterranean confirmations in Green and Polish notes and claims in YELLOW and Cherry red for casualty notes...Frost blue will be for notes of any other kind BLACK listings are for pilots whose scores are listed, but where we have been unable to track their operational record for the present moment....... NIGHT-FIGHTER pilots will simply have three ASTERISKS*** to the right of their listing. LUFTWAFFE PILOTS CREDITED WITH MORE THAN 100 VICTORIES. The JU-87 "Stuka" had not arrived yet, so German close support consisted of HS-129 Biplanes with strengthened cockpit casings for low level work. He was successful as a squadron leader in Spain, where he aquired his 'Mickey Mouse' emblem from one of the original three squadrons of the Condor Legion. POLAND:1 September, 1939......The Polish campaign for the Luftwaffe lasts just 17 days. Operations up to this point have claims ranging the length of the Reich, but these claims taper off on the 17th. Two things were happening at this stage of the Polish fighting which rendered the campaign essentially over in this 17 day period. Warsaw was surrounded by the 15th of September, and on the 17th Molotov declared that the Polish government had "ceased to exist". German troops also occupy Brest-Litovsk, AND the Polish government resign and take refuge, all on the 17th. Luftwaffe claims taper off for 3 days, and reappear on a different front.....the West, which will be next... For now, here are the figures and claims, plus notes , for the first 17 day period. Some excellent Luftwaffe pilots of the future made their fledgling appearances in the best possible way on this day, by the destruction of an enemy machine.... The Two Clausens.....Fw. Erwin CLAUSEN, bagged a P-24, and Obf. Walter CLAUSEN, got a P-43. One is senior to the other and they are in different units, but I have a sneaking feeling that these two may be related. Why do I say that?...Well, ERWIN CLAUSEN is listed on the100+ list with 132 enemy aircraft to his credit. Now, considering these two both scored first on the same day, I'm going to find out if there was any family connection (Brother maybe? Father/Son?).....bit of a mystery, this one! Uft. Condor Legion. The figures for the Spanish Civil War given by the site in use tell a wonderful story of this pilot. His first confirmed victory is listed way back on the 4TH OF JANUARY 1937. This means he would have undoubtedly been flying the inferior Hienkel 51 Bi-plane fighter that Condor was equipped to begin with. his first kill was nothing less than an I-16 Rata, the most dangerous Red aircraft in Spain. his association with the Heinkel 51 seems to have been one of frustration, or he was wounded, because his next kill is on the 27th of AUGUST, nearly 8 months later.....and its in a brand shiny new Me-109B, thanks very much! This could give us a practical date as to the introduction of the 109 into Spain. After knocking down a Tu S62 bomber and an AS 6 Envoy, Harro Harder proceeds to knock one Soviet fighter after another from the sky in his shiny new machine. His 'ace' victory in Spain comes on the *9th of September, 1937 after an engagement with an I-16. He gets six more for a total of 11 before his claims are seen no more in Spain...he may not have survived Spain unwounded...more research needed...) Lt. GENTZEN NO.3...P-37/ SEPTEMBER 14: The Polish Air Force is suddenly active in a big way today, with sorties, no doubt, to try to interfear with German attempts to snap the jaw of the Warsaw encirclement shut, something they were to do anyway on the 15th-16th September. It gives the hungry German fighter pilots a chance to grab the first 'ace' crown.....and it happens alright, and in a not un-dramatic fashion... Fw. Wolfgang BRACHS...P-23/..Ltn. These claim figures speak for themselves for the next three days leading up to the collapse of the Polish government on September 17th, 1939. SEPTEMBER 15: 1 pilot claim confirmed. With the Poles totally out now, and the pickings slim, an old vet grabs the only kill of the day. Oblt. His record in the 'ace' race came up short in Spain, for he got an I-16 on the 23/8...and another claim unconfirmed for an official total of three....but on the 15th Sept 1939, he may have had that claim in mind as he swooped in to bag a Lublin RXIII....for a Luftwaffe total of 4...but you can just see him grinning to himself and saying, "Well theres FIVE! SEPTEMBER 16: 1 claim confirmed. Lt. You mean the old site you were? http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/war-air/12815-luftwaffe-aces-list-pilots-100-kills-notes.html
Yes.....they gave me a link that listed Lufwaffe claims one by one.....a site that had them organised into different campaigns, ....it was on a white background with an Eagle....if you go to this post on other site and look through the links posted there, you will find it.....its the primary source, and if I want to go past the first 17 days and do the war ENTIRE,...... I need it. It is on this post on other site, and the link was supplied for me in a post BELOW this one...

Many thanks ol'lad!...... This thread will build up GRADUALLY....it requires much cross checking, and there are times when your head feels kind of 'fuzzy' from all the detail....but if we sort it, and organise it properly, time and work will give us a unique record of German pilots..... If you want, we can start one for Finnish pilots too!
No higge....that would be a giant job for ME.......Gradually, the same thing can happen, with a chip by chip approach, it can slowly and surely be done.....Same format.....Give me the links, if they exist and I will begin a thread.....
No mate....whats you interest field...personal?...Research?....special interest field?... Was he a night or day pilot? Sorry for lateness of reply.....other commitments...work, training, legal hassles...it all eats in...
My 2 paternal great-grandmothers were 2 sisters from Germany named Zwernemann who immigrated to Texas w/ their widowed mother and 6 brothers and sisters. Hombressen is where their father was born. Their mother was born in Udenhausen. Both of my paternal great-grandfathers came from what is now Nord Hessen, around Kassel. One od my cousins is doing genealogical research and says all the Zwernemanns in the US are related to us except 2.
If you have a look at the links so kidly provided by Higge, you rel may come up with a "kill" or two... EVENTUALLY we are going to list EVERY official claim from the Lufwaffe....time constraints on me lately (I'm switching careers) have stopped me from spending as much time on this as I would like....feel free to make your way through the links put in by Higge.....If Mr. Zwenerman has a claim to his name, it will be listed thus! Maybe you would like to tell us a little more of the Zwernermann's generally....posts like this from ordinary Germans are the meat and potatoes of a BALANCED coverage of WW2....something that is overdue...
He had 126 kills and was at one time Erich Hartmann's wingman. He was killed in France 8 Apr 44 by the American pilot who shot his plane down as he was floating to earth in his parachute. I saw a terrible video on youtube with an American pilot describing what it was like to shoot someone down like that. My famiily immigrated to Texas in the 1850s and I was born in Dallas on the day Graf Stauffenberg tried to assassinate Hitler by leaving the briefcase w/ a bomb in it under the table in the Wolfschanze. As we all know, this failed and the SS exacted their revenge. I have asked one of my friends who is 9 years older than I am to tell me what is was like here during the war. She was in Schlesien where her father was an engineer working on the ground radar system. Linda
