What would have been the approximate price of soap and matches in Britain during World War 2? Many thanks to anyone who can help me out! I've Googled it, but to no avail.
Hello Jess and welcome to forums. I can't answer to your question but someone will come with an answer, I'm sure. Meanwhile, take a look around and see what we have, you will find alot here. Cheers Higge
Thank you! I will do so... I have come up with a penny for a box of 25 matches and 7p for a large block of soap, but if anyone could give me an idea of whether this is correct-ish or not that would be appreciated.
Soap was rationed from February 9th 1942. The entitlement was four coupons to last for a four week period. This ration had to cover all types of soap (including Soap powder for washing clothes). Women with children under the age on one received an additional ration to cover the chore of washing nappies. (I wonder if those employed in 'dirty' industries-eg Coal Miners, received an additional supplement too?)
After much searching, I have located a cutting from a wartime newspaper which contains an advertisement for ZIXT handsoap. One tablet of which is shown to be priced at 4d (Four Pre-Decimal Pence) plus one Ration coupon.
