Hello! My name is Simon, (Auchandarroch means "field of oak", and is the house I live in) I'm 53, and have probably been interested in WW2 all my life! I grew up, like many kids in the 1960s and 1970s with hundreds, if not thousands, of Airfix kits and soldiers! I have recently been researching my family history and would like to learn a bit more of what experiences my late dad had in 1944-45. Originally from Brighton, but have lived in Scotland since the age of 3. In terms of family history, I'd like to find out more about my dad's ships HMS Fury (which I know was mined off Normandy after D-Day), HMS Freebooter, and also about postings to Norway in May 1945 where he was stationed.. Personally, I am a collector of commemorative medals, and have a particular interest in the peace/victory medals of WW1 and WW2, usually issued by towns and cities for celebrations in 1919 and 1946. The WW2 ones are much scarcer than those from WW1. Cheers!
Welcome aboard Simon. I too still have Airfix 1/76 scale models (e.i. the M16 With .50 AA guns, the M24 Chaffee, the Krup Protze, the Sherman Firefly all be it Revell nowadays) on my shelf to build. And collected the Airfix soldiers too. About 24 boxes (age over 35 years old or more, and not a single soldier MIA) are still waiting to be handed over from father to son (6 yrs old) . I think he is still a bit too young to play with them.
