My Dad was a Londoner but when he was conscripted in in 1940 he ended up in the Green Howards, a Yorkshire Regiment. Was regiment allocation simply based on topping up regiments regardless of location? The Green Howards had taken a mauling at Dunkirk so would have needed new recruits.

Just interested that he was placed in a regiment whose depot HQ was so far from his home.

Don't know if the system changed, but b October 1942 the system went as follows, certainly in my case.

    1. Primary Training Depot for about 6 weeks to learn basic infantry and assess where you were best suited
    2. Having been assessed as suitable for Wireless, 12 weeks training at a Driver/Operator
    3. After training, posting to a Light Ack Ack unit.
    4. Posting overseas to another Light ack unit in North Africa

In short, called up in Oct '42, posted overseas in April '43

Essentially, preferences could be expressed, but overall needs of the Army took precedence.
