Did anyone have a chance to catch the film? I believe it was very true to Hillenbrand's work and was a great tribute to Louie Zamperini.
Just saw this film last night, and I enjoyed it. It's gotten some negative reviews but I thought it was good. I read the book within the last several months and thought the film followed it fairly closely. There were certainly some Hollywood moments but that's to be expected. I agree, I thought it was a nice tribute to Louis Zamperini. While the movie didn't really cover anything about his post-war redemption (which is really the heart of his story), it's hard to fit all that into a movie that already has a run time of just under 140 minutes as it is. I actually had a question on a uniform issue, if an expert happens to see this. The enlisted crewman in the raft along Zamperini and Phillips was Francis McNamara. In the movie he was depicted wearing Staff Sergeant chevrons with an Army Air Forces wings and propeller logo in between the stripes and rocker. I'd never seen that before, and my Googling isn't turning up much. Can someone help out? When was that worn? What does it signify, if anything other than just a USAAF Staff Sergeant?
It looks like it's gotten a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/unbroken_2014/ Despite some negative reviews, i still want to see it.
yeah well, seen it.. it's okay-ish to see it once....but not again. or to have it on DVD full price. Though there must be hordes of people that have no knowledge of pow treatment by the japs of those taken to japan. Maybe it is worthwhile for them to see it. (that 's already 125million japanese of today) edit: PANG! having seen the japanese actor being a POPsinger and the end message of "FORGIVING" of this US character , I get the awkward feeling that the main audience to target were the Japanese...and not particularly the american cinema audience... :/
I saw the movie two times now and I really enjoyed it a lot. It's a rare story that thought me some more about the life inside of the Airforce pilots. I know most about Paratroopers/Army groundtroops so the life inside of the airplanes was new to me. I thought Jack o'Connell was brilliantly cast, he played the role of Louie so pure, so strong and he was easy to like and respect as a character. The other character I really liked was Phil. Louie's relationship with him is portrayed very well. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was that the ending was a bit abrupt, but for the most part I really loved it. The dangers of the ocean, being mentally broken in the POW camp, it was all portrayed very well. I think the movie deserved more credit. It was overall a great movie and it's pretty close to the book ( so far ). It also showed another side to the Japanese for me, some prison guards seemed to be reasonably kind to the POW's. Only the bird confused me. His relationship with Louie is very strange and confusing. In the book I just read up to where he makes his entrance so I'm curious to read more about him.
