I highly recommend that you buy the expansions that give you much more game play features compared to vanilla.

    Semper FI
    For the Motherland
    Their Fines Hour

You may want to wait for steam sales or packs of them though.

What additional features do these expansions offer?

Once you get Windows 10, can you let us know if the game will work for it, I'd appreciate it.

So how is vanilla HoI3 post-patches and updates, I've heard the game had a lot of problems when it first came out, did Paradox Interactive do a good job in resolving the games issues, I know there's the Black ICE mod that helped to fix the games problems(as well as adding new units), I'm just curious how well the "official" fixes did?

Hi, I think that they did amazing job fixing the game if I compare it now to vanilla version. Add all three expansions and you've got quite solid game. What they couldn't fix is the game mechanics and engine which is why I don't want to play it anymore. It just wasn't the game it could have been because of limitations in game engine and mechanics.

I highly recommend you to visit their official forums where you'll find all the information needed about the patches and expansions.

If you are thinking about getting a copy Steam often has pretty good "End of Summer" sales. You might want to keep an eye out for them.

Got it, thanks for the heads-up, btw do you have to sign up to Steam in order to buy games from them, I've been thinking about signing up, just haven't gotten to doing it yet, I can be a bit of a procrastinator sometimes. :p

Yes, you need to create a Steam account in order to purchase games. You sign into the account to access your game library, the Steam store, to download games, play online, access the Steam instant messenger, etc.

A bit late to this party, but...

Steam is free, you just buy games on it. No need for CDs. Hearts of Iron IV does not have a CD version, only a steam version (unless you live in Germany).

Hearts of Iron 3 was crap when it first came out. The patches and DLC (not the sprite packs - I used the Nato Counters mode anyways) make the game much more enjoyable and playable. The DLC, based on the name for each one, adds events, units, better AI, etc for those specific regions.

    The ones I have are:

    For the Motherland (FTM)
    Semper Fi (SF)
    Their Finest Hour (TFH)

They are all required for the Black ICE mod which, in the review I will publish later, is the best RTS I have ever played. Its not for the feint of heart, but for people who like the micro-management and making tough, strategic decisions - production and technology wise.

If anyone is interested in setting up an MP game (HOI 3 or 4) send me a PM and we can exchange Steam contact details.
If anyone has Tabletop Simulator on Steam, look up the Global War 1939 Mod - its based off of Axis&Allies, but is so much better with more going on - message me if you want to play a game of that too!
