I am researching Arnold A. Krysch who was KIA December 16, 1944 with the 15th Field Artillery Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division. From my research on the Internet the 2nd ID was in an attack to capture dams in the Roer area of Germany starting about December 13. Does anyone have any detailed information about where the 15th FAB was on December 16? Thanks.
that day, Dec 16, was the start day of the German Ardennes/Bulge offensive....one of the biggest battles for the US
Yes, but the 2nd ID was pulled out of the line on Dec. 17 and sent to the northern part of the bulge.
From the 15th Field Artillery Association website: Granted, that doesn't tell you where the 15th FAB were on the 16th, but they were at least within one day's driving distance of Elsenborn. This map of the Sixth Panzer Army Attack shows the general position of the 2nd Division as being just SW of Wahlersheid on the 15th of December. Read about the withdrawal of the 2nd Infantry Division here. The 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion had companies attached to the 9th and 38th Infantry Regiments. The 644th's Dec 1944 AAR has coordinates and towns mentioned which may help.
