Can anyone tell me more about the ranks in this photograph, please (in fact anything else would be appreciated)?

It shows the Hooe (a small village in East Sussex) Home Guard, in 1942 (so I’ve been told).

It seems, from the insignia on the upper arms, that there are about five sergeants along the front row, which surprises me! There also appears to be some sort of insignia at the end of the sleeve, near the wrist, that I can’t understand.

Any information would be very welcome.

I's hard to tell. from right to left (first row) I see two Lance corporals, one corporal, then the sergeants. The sleeve insigia's are probably "arms of service strips" (they were shaped like ghost buster ghost hoods) . The unit can be seen on the cap badge, but it's hard to decypher.

I must apologise, Skipper! I’ve been waiting for an email to tell me when a reply arrived but none ever came.

I was surprised at the number of sergeants in the platoon – seems like a case of too many chiefs and not enough Indians - any idea how that could be?

Could you tell me more about the arms of service strips, please? I know about those service strips in WW1 but nothing about these.

I will see if I can get a better copy of the photograph and hope to be able to see the insignia.

However, from subsequent research (done yesterday), I can, now, say that we are looking at members of the 13th Platoon, E Company, 19th Division (Rother). I’ve found all these men, listed in the HG Register of Home Guards for East Sussex in the East Sussex records Office.

    Thanks, and again my apologies
