Hello All, I'm thankful that this forum exist and seems to have a very active base with a wealth of collective wisdom. My main reason for joining is to gain more knowledge on how to research my father's service as well as to read what others are willing to share regarding their service or that of their family members. This all stems from wanting to build Shadow Boxes (for my sisters and I) in memory and honor of my father. My father passed over 4-decades ago, and we never had the opportunity to discuss the war and his involvement. I was very young at that time and to discuss something of that nature would be the furthest thing a father and a young son would ever explore. I do have his Enlisted Record and Report of Separation Honorable Discharge, a few photos, and an old newspaper clipping with a short article about him (unknown what publication). However, there are a lot more questions I have as the separation document doesn't contain the details I would like to know, such as the unit, at least to company level, he served with. There are little clues in a photo I have that provide some insight, but it also brings more questions about. For instance, the discharge papers list the unit as being Headquarters 80th Infantry Division, but in a photo, his combat patch is clearly with the 12th Army Corps. There are other items I noticed, but it would be more appropriate to post them in the appropriate section or follow-up in a different thread. It's these types of things I'd like to research and get to the bottom of. As for me; I am also a veteran who served in the Army as well. Thank you for your time and allowing me to say hello.
Howdy and welcome. Post what you have and we'll look at it. Some of the guys here are pretty sharp. I wished I was one of them.
Welcome to the forum. We'd love to see what you have. Post the pictures in the Information area or in What Grandad Did in the War. We'll do our best to help.
Welcome and a salute to you for your Service. One note on the discharge papers; As troops were preparing to ship out home they were usually re-assigned to different Groups. Usually those staying for occupation duty. Mostly this was only on paper and many Units would be absorbed into a single large morass. My Uncle's WW2 Group more than tripled in size (on paper) as his Group processed the redeployment's. Don't hesitate to ask, it's what we live for here ---- to find answers.
Thank you all for the warm welcome. I scanned the photo I mentioned, the copy of the article, and also the separation documents. I’ll post them in the location where Greybeard has recommended. Again, thank you, and I look forward to the responses. Sal
