    Hi
I found interesting information aboute calculation of 2ww gun lenghts. http://amizaur.prv.pl/www.wargamer.org/GvA/weapons/introduction.html#Calculation_of_Gun_Barrel_Lengths
For example countries like US measure gun barrel as bore lenght and some european countries measure from rear face of the breech ring. Its probably the foult od diffrent data . I m tring to set in order data some 2ww and post war guns:
Us measure - EU measure (in calibers)
    -76 mm m1a1
    L52 - L54.6
    -90 mm m3
    L50 - L52.5
    -88 mm kwk 43
    ? - L71
    -75 mm kwk 42
    ? - L70
    -88 mm kwk 36
    ? - L56
    -77 mm oqf mk ii
    ? - L50
    -oqf 17 pdr mk...
    ? - L55
    -oqf 20 pdr mk i
    ? - L66.7
    -oqf 32 pdr
    ? - L62
    -100 mm d-10
    L53.5 - L56 or L59??
    -122 mm d-25
    L43 - L46 or L47.9??
    -125 mm 2a46
    L48 - L52 ?(I m not sure other sources)
    Corrections, other data??

It's not the EU but Germany (and possibly Russia?) that measures gun length differently, I remember being confused at what the 88/54 in Italian use was until I found out it was the Krupp Flak 36, it gets even more confusing with the guns of the cruisers Italy got after WW1, the 15cm L45 becomes the 149/43 but it's the same gun !

[derail]It drives me slightly nuts when somebody refers to the '5"/.38'. [/derail]

That could refer to a pretty short barreld mortar couldn't it? Would still take some fixing though ....

The instance that comes most readily to mind is the mention of '5"/.38' guns being manned by sailors during the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor. If I could have located the author of that one...

I think I remember that now. That particular string is poorly suited for searching the web though.

It may have been in Homer Wallin's book. Or in one of several dozen others on the topic I've read. [IMG]
