It was a designed play, the center was never supposed to snap the ball (the offensive linemen are illegally lined up). It's designed to draw the defense offsides due to confusion, and short of that you just hold the snap and take the delay of game. The likely explanation is that the center thought the defense fell for it and lined up offsides, which they did not. That's my best guess.
I guess I can buy that, but these teams act so starstruck about New England that they make bonehead decisions to counter act a very good football team. I think that whats NE does well at this point, take you out of your comfort zone psychologically.

I happened to be watching the game and I think McCabe nailed it, though IMO the player at center just had a brain-fart. The player at QB clearly wasn't expecting it. Even if the defense lined up or jumped offside, the offense was in an illegal formation. Either way, that play was FUBAR.
