Hello! First time poster! I was given my grandfathers WWII discharge papers along with all his medals. He was in the 30th Infantry Company E. Automatic rifleman was his military occupation. Carried the BAR if I'm not mistaken. When I opened up the big envelope with his honorable discharge paperwork this hat was located in the bottom of the envelope. I have researched with no luck. This could have been something he picked up or was it issued... I'm kinda lost with it. Like I said I'm new to the site and look forward to learning more of my grandfathers history through for his encounters in WWII. As of now I cannot stop researching. My 9 year old son is just as excited about researching his past as I am! Thanks for the help in advance!! http://s7.postimg.org/l24zcddsr/image.jpg
@Slipdigit, yes the color of the ribbon is black. Thank you all for the responses. The only difference I see in the badge on the hat I have and the badge in picture is the crown over anchor is not on mine. But that's it, I wonder why my grandfather would have had this? Picked it up or something along the way? No way to tell I guess. Another link to close up of badge and ribbon. http://s21.postimg.org/j0h2xa9pz/image.jpg
Hi there and welcome! Great find! Also, it appears your grandfather served in the same battalion as my grandfather. If you have any questions or info requests, please feel free to pm me!
No markings on the back...it's a stamped metal not solid insignia. It's super small also. I had my son put it on his head and realized just how small it is.. However I'm not sure on the proper way these were worn, maybe just set on top of head. http://s10.postimg.org/96cmkmc61/image.jpg http://s10.postimg.org/hrajpjbq1/image.jpg
McCabe, that's awesome! I will definitely be asking some questions! I actually just received all his service medals in the mail. For some reason he never sent off for them? The French Croix de Guerre shoulder lanyard was the only item he had along with this hat. I'm just amazed at all this battalion was involved in, he would never really talk about it, after researching it for myself.
On a side note, irrelevant from the hat. This was stuffed inside the hat. Nazi Crimea Shield. I wish I had been shown this stuff sooner so I could have asked questions. I've researched the shield just thought I'd share... Thought it was a pretty cool find! http://s24.postimg.org/yxyi43p45/image.jpg http://s24.postimg.org/671oe1jad/image.jpg
Assuming the hat an pin are Italian, my guess is the bought them or picked them up as souvenirs. The 30th did spend a bit of time in Italy, so that would make some sense. The insignia seems to my untrained eye to be lacking in detail. Hopefully, one of our militaria experts will stop by in the near future and share their thoughts.
