I've been lurking here for some time but, if you check me out under the same username SDP, you will find I'm quite active on the sister site ww2talk. My main interest is in my fathers WW2 service. He served with the British 24th Lancers and the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. Until relatively recently, when we disbanded, I also ran the 24th Lancers Old Comrades Association as it had become too demanding for the Veteran who had been running the Association! Quite a privilege I can assure you. The 24th Lancers served with distinction in Normandy but were disbanded in late July 1944 due to heavy casualties. My secondary interest is in the British Comet tank that my father drove with 3RTR. It had a good history, met head on with a Tiger tank at the River Aller and, if you are into scale models, is the box art for Broncos model of the A34 Comet tank. Why am I here specifically?...the craft that took my father to Normandy on D-Day was USLST 229 and I would like to find out more about it if possible. Steve
Here's the NavSource listing for it along with two pictures. http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/16/160229.htm
Welcome to the Forum, SDP. It's not much, but here is the 2nd page from a 3 page history of LST 229 which mentions it's activities during the Normandy invasion. Unfortunately, it only speaks mostly in generalities. View attachment 23612
Thanks to everyone for that warm welcome. I look forward to both learning from and contributing to the Forum. Steve
