I have seen many different stories about the flag raising at Shuri Castle. After a brutal battle at Wana Ridge, my grandfathers next objective was Shuri Castle. They were told it was heavily fortified. My grandpa and his buddies we're excited because they thought they were gonna find gold there. They thought they would be rich. Their little bags of gold teeth would be nothing compared to the gold they thought they'd find there. The battle wasn't as brutal as Wana or Kakazu from weeks earlier. The Navy had pounded it pretty good and the castle was rubble, but the Japanese were still dug in there. There still was a Japanese flag flying on the rubble. A Marine took it down and asked if there was anyone that had a Stars and Stripes with them. No one had a flag. So another Marine came forward taking his helmet off and stated that he has the next closest thing. It was a Confederate Flag he had inside his helmet. They flew it and a picture was taken. It was later taken down after they found a Stars and Stripes. The Japanese Imperial Flag taken down was donated years later to the Battle of Okinawa Museum at Camp Kinser Okinawa. I have seen people referring to this as a racist hillbilly who flew it as a joke to get people mad and other crazy stories. In our politically correct society, everything is offensive. War is Absolute Hell period. Don't let the warped mind of someone pushing an agenda tarnish the history of these great warriors. Here is a pic of my grandfather with the original Japanese Imperial Flag at Camp Kinser.
There are tons of pictures of Marines flying the Confederate battle flag in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and even the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. It's not a racial thing, it's a Southern thing. Most of those bitching never had their arse on the line, just sand in their lady parts. One of my sons carried a Bocephus version during his deployments to the war zone. Hung it up on his wall when he got back, funny that one of his best friends a Dark Green Marine that deployed with him never saw it as a racial thing. In fact until he was transferred to another unit he spent most every weekend at our house or went with us up to the lake. The last one is labeled as US Marines but I think it's actually US Army because the vehicle marking are white not yellow. Personally I'm pretty much color blind, I sincerely believe in the words of the Reverend Martin Luther King, a southerner by the way, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." I try to do my part and insist that others around me do their best to realize his dream. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Quite possibly the greatest quote of all time. Have it on my classroom wall. Nothing sums it up quite like it.
