I posted this link in General Discussion before I discovered the CBI section. (I'm new here.) He had some interesting recollections. http://ww2thebigone.com/2016/03/27/merrills-marauders/
424 dead, wounded, missing and 1900 withdrawn because of sickness......a real hell......no beds, much rain, heat, not much sleep, little food,etc.....part of the war that receives little attention
There were a lot of really awful places to be in the war, and this mission had to be one of the worst.
the heat and rain makes for more disease, hard to heal, etc ??? than a cold weather environment? gear and weapons degrade more?
I don't pretend to speak from experience about either extreme. The tropics appear to breed a larger variety of diseases and fungi than cold environments, with insects spreading the germs, but extreme cold can kill and cripple in different ways. In Burma, the punishing terrain and the thick foliage that made it easier to ambush soldiers contributed to its hellishness.
didn't the heat and rain degrade clothes? rifle stocks? clothes especially......from what I've read ....also leather.....plus the constant sweating caused problems with skin
