I am a huge Movie freak and I especially like to search out new foreign made Military/ WW2 War movies. Some of these I am sure have been discussed, but here they are: Fortress of War: Russian Film About the Battle at Brest Fortress in 1941...Outstanding Movie and an Amazing True Story. The Eternal Zero: Japanese Film about 2 Granchildren searching out the Truth about the History of their Paternal Grandfather who was a Japanese Navy Pilot in WW2. My Way: Korean Made film about the Amazing True Story of Yang Kyoungjong, the only man to ever fight for THREE Armies: Japanese, Soviet and Wermacht. Back to 1942: Chinese Made Film about the Japanese invasion of China in Henan Province during a deadly drought in 1942. Adrien Brody (of the Pianist) stars. City of Life and Death: Chinese made film about the Massacre at Nanking. A True Masterpiece IMO. A Must Watch for any serious student of WW2. Sophie Scholl: The Final Days: German Made Film memorializing one of the most famous anti-nazi Resistance fighters. Assembly: Chinese Made film set Post WW2 during the Chinese Civil War in 1947. Based on a True Story. Excellent Battle sequences. I will post more as I come across them.......Happy Watching!
I'll look for them. Have you seen "Ike: Countdown to D-Day' yet? Ranks with Tora Tora Tora in showing how a low budget or made-for-TV movie can surpass the big budget productions. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401504/
Saw a recent film called Labyrinth of Lies. not exactly a war film per se, set in post war Germany and concerning the effort to prosecute war criminals. a bit melodramatic at times but seemed to tackle the complexity of one generation coming to terms with the deeds of the generation before. In German with subtitles, so if it kept me interested....
I watched it on the 6th. I'd never even heard of it before and it was produced 10 years ago. I thought they did a good job overall, but there were some glaring errors, such as calling Spaatz by the wrong nickname (Jimmy vs Tooey) and showing the date of June 6th as when Ike talked with the 101st prior to their jump into Normandy, that irritated me a bit. Also, thought they portrayed Monty as a bit more of a putz than he probably was. This afternoon, I watched a bit of a movie (on Netflix, I think) named "When Trumpets Fade" that was supposed to be about the 28th in the Hurtgen. It was a low-budget fiasco with terrible writing and wooden acting. I slogged through about 30 minutes before turning away. Don't waste your time on this cliche-ridden crap.
Wow, that June 6th one is s pretty big booboo. I didn't notice it. Pretty sloppy. Still, lots of good equipment and vehicles and I thought Selleck did a great job. Maybe a tiny, tiny bit too self-deprecating.
Yeah I have watched that one a few times...besides the glaring historical errors I thought Selleck and McRaney did a great job of portraying Ike and Patton. That scene between those was hilarious to me... Patton: "Well Communism is for the Next War... Ike: "G_ddammitt George!!" Speaking of WW2 Netflix movies, here are a few I have seen that are really good: Generation War Secrets of War Naked Among Wolves Into the White The Invisible Front (Russian Partisans in WW2) Diplomacy Flame and Citron (Awesome film about two famous WW2 Denmark Resistance Assassins) The Railway Man (Must Watch if you saw Bridge Over the River Kwai) Female Agents (About OSS Agents Operating in France) There are more of course, plus I have got list for different time periods including the Cold War and Films on Terrorism..will post later.
Yes, I agree fully that Selleck did a great Ike. He looked like Ike far more than I thought he would. Overall, I thought it was a good production. I liked the scene transition at the end.
