Of course it wasn't ethnicity, it was environment. After all people living in the worst Chicago neighborhoods behave differently than those living in gated communities.
The USSR was a multi-ethnic country, it was frequently said that the worst criminals were the soldiers from Asiatic republics, who didn't have any reasons to avenge anything.

But really, in Poland there were about 50,000 Jews in hiding at that time, The others minorities lived as before: Ukrainians, Belorussians. Completely "un-polonized".
Although some Germans fled, most of them didn't.
After my family had been deported from the annexed by the USSR territories they were given a German house - with the owners inside. And they lived together almost a year.
And actually both families parted as friends.

I'm not trying to defend the rapists - they deserve just contempt, but what the Germans did, especially at the east is beyond the human reason, unthinkable, uncomprehensible. One must first sweep in front of own dorstep before blaming others, for comparably far lesser wrongdoings. To rape a nun is horrible thing but murdering kids, organizing borthels in concentration camps, starving milions of POWs etc, executing whole classes of primary school kids etc, etc, is quite another pair of shoes if I may say so. I'd rather be quiet and show a bit more respect for real victims of ultimate beasts.

 

May I, speaking as a female say that, whether it was Mother Teresa or somebody from Cynthia Payne's brothels, I'm sure the victims weren't entirely bothered about the nationality of the genetalia violating them. Good evening lads.

Gordon please don't insult my intelligence. I know you long enough and I think well enough to never propose such a thing. As for defending Stalin (as you seem to think that's I'm doing) well then my friend it's time for you to start running. I like to consider myself the defender of history that is all.

 

Maybe genitalia of a rapist had no ethnicity, but justice clearly had.
Because the victim of a American soldier had a good chance to be given the satisfaction of seeing him executed, and the victim of a Soviet soldier almost none.
States are fully responsible for crimes committed by their soldiers - especially if they don't do enough to curtail them.
The Americans fulfilled their responsibility in this regard, the Soviets didn't.

 

Now, let's be a bit futuristic. Can you imagine this headline appear in year 2086 (70 years from today):

He wasn't on his way to UK. He lived in France for over ten years.
He was a hardened criminal, and spent time in prison in Poland and in France.
In France he committed a series of robberies and was sentenced to six years in prison. He would have been there even today, but was released early although it was known he was messed up.
Better blame your liberal criminal-huggers who sic predators on people.

So, once again, a direct question: can you imagine this headline appear in year 2086?

And an additional one: Why such headlines still appear about the Soviet soldiers, deliberators of your country, whether you admit that or not?

 

The difference is that rapes, like that in France, happen. They are inevitable. The nationality of the criminal is immaterial. He is guilty of his crime, not the country he was born.

But the Soviet rapes are different. Not only millions of Soviets soldiers were/are guilty, but the Soviet State too. The soldiers and the state are equally responsible for a massive war crime, unprecedented in modern history.
Because it's the unconditional duty of every state to prevent such crimes, to maintain discipline, to properly educate and train its soldiers.

And no, "because of war" is not acceptable. It's required by the Hague Conventions - the so called Laws of War.
Laws valid only in time of war.

 

"But the Soviet rapes are different" - So different from the Japanese rape of the Chinese?
I would put a bullet in the back of the head of anyone I found raping anything. Worry about the consequences later...

 

I don't know much about what was going in China, it seems in some case they lost control over their advancing soldiers, and in other cases orders were given. The latter alone would make them worse. At least the Soviet leaders didn't encourage rapes and looting, and actually their ideology forbade collective responsibility - blaming common people for crimes of their leaders.
In both cases the number of victims seems be based on mere guessing, nobody knows how much of them were for sure.

At that time life in the USSR wasn't fun at all too, it was basically a giant shithole.

 

Like the descriptions of a Eastern European (Wat), whose country Poland is dominated by the Soviet Union, whose memoire is dictated from memory while working in the US during the 60's is super reliable...

More than other factors, hunger prompted waifs to steal. Robberies became routine, a natural feature of survival on the street. On the street, crime could be a form of amusement and adventure. For many waifs, particularly boys, it was an essential “means of proving one’s reliability and prowess” to the rest of a gang. Abandoned children arriving from the countryside were often slower to embrace thievery than those from urban backgrounds, but in general, the longer a child was left astray, the more likely he or she was to succumb to crime. Gangs and groups of children as large as ten or thirty ambushed individuals for their belongings; even healthy men of substantial strength were constantly at risk of being beaten and robbed.

Constant illegal activity and life in the street insured contact between besprizornye and the criminal underworld of adults; older vagabonds schooled young newcomers in the art of crime. Street life also forced abandoned children into a torrent of drugs and sex. Tobacco and alcohol addictions ran rampant, and the first half of the 1920s saw the influx of a larger supply of cocaine as well as the development of a more extensive network of drug dealers. Urchins lived and worked in the midst of this network and drug expenses spurred on juveniles’ thefts.

In addition to drugs, the street introduced large percentages of its inhabitants to early sexual activity. Waifs generally began their sex lives by the age of fourteen, many girls as early as seven. Rape was pervasive in the underworld and waifs were quickly saturated with sexually transmitted diseases.
Crime, drugs, sex, and the harsh nature of life on the street caused a deep imprint on generations of abandoned children.

In the twenties the number of homeless children was estimated at seven million. You have many of the rapist right here. They were 20+ old during WW2.

 

Lev Kopelev
Kopelev was born in Kiev, Ukraine, to a middle-class Jewish family. In 1926, his family moved to Kharkov. While a student at Kharkov State University in the philosophy faculty, Kopelev began writing in the Russian and Ukrainian languages; some of his articles were published in the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Languages in 1935 in the German language faculty, and, after 1938, he taught at the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History where he earned a PhD.

When the German–Soviet War broke out in June 1941, he volunteered for the Red Army and used his knowledge of German to serve as a propaganda officer and an interpreter.
When he entered East Prussia with the Red Army throughout the East Prussian Offensive, he sharply criticized the atrocities against the German civilian population and was arrested in 1945 and sentenced to a ten-year term in the Gulag for fostering "bourgeois humanism" and for "compassion towards the enemy".
