    Feldwebel = Sargeant
    Gefrieter = Corporal

    (not sure about the spellings...)

    Gefreiter is Corporal. But no need to worry Ricky, you misspelled "sergeant" more than any German word. :D

    Or if the two vowels are together then pronounce it the English way of the last vowel.

    Quote:

    "This mentions the actions of just THREE King Tigers of Schwere SS Panzerabteilung 103(503) on April 19th 1945. These three King Tigers wiped out over 100 T34/85s and and entire company of IS 2s in an ambush in some woods. Korner scored 39 possitively".

    39 ISII's! Amazing. More so since they only operated in Regiments of 21 tanks. So this is either the wiping out of 2 Regiments or the best part of a Gaurds Heavy Tank Brigade(65 IS tanks)
    140 kills with, at most, 3x84 rounds= 252.
    If we assume other targets were hit besides tanks(it mentions fuel trucks at least) this is less then 2 rounds per kill.
    As Korner's kills are said to be 'positive' I welcome it being posted so we can check it.

    It is not 'my' quote but here is one source for this claim. It is repeated in various forms in books and sites all over the place and is highly suspect.

    In Normandy we have Will Fey's superhuman feat of 88 tank kills in 50 days.
    His most famous action was when he, alone in a trackless damaged Tiger. In the middle of an open field and under air attack, knocked out 15 Shermans advancing on him. He hit 14 of them then sent a crewman out to borrow some ammo and he got 1 round. Then a 15th Sherman rushed him and one of his shots glanced of the Sherman and with his next round he destroyed the Sherman! strangely the Unit he claims the Shermans were from (23rd Hussars) makes no mention of this action in its War Diary and it even seems they did not have that number of Shermans in action on the day in question (7th or 8th of August, depending on source)
    Believable?

    'TIC II' page 330/331

    'Armor Battles Of The Waffen SS 1943-45'. pages 196/197 hardback, Pages 143-148 paperback.

    No, I don't believe this story. It's almost impossible to load, aim and fire all by yourself, and then hit moving targets that are shooting at you. I would be surprised if one tank crew could hold off 15 Shermans advancing on it, but a single man? Impossible. He would have time to kill maybe five of them before the rest would be so close that death was a certainty.

    Whoops, it seems I was a bit unclear in my post about Fey. I meant 'alone' as in his Tiger on its own. Not him alone in the Tiger. He had crew but mentions the hits wounded some of them. In the same action he claimed he destroyed lots of A/T guns, halftracks, carriers, trucks and men. What a hero!

    Okay, thanks for the clarification. It still seems that this story should be taken with a truckload of salt.
