Yess!!! Finally I got a copy of the norwegian movie 'Kampen om Tungtvannet' which is about the sabotage mission Operation Gunnerside at the heavywater factory at Rjukan, Norway. The movie is made in 1948 and had 3 of the original Gunnerside members as actors. A good and realistic movie. 100 times better than the hollywood movie about the same operation, Heroes of Telemark, which is just bad bad bad...
Don´t they broadcast that one on TV ( NRK ) once ( or twice ? ( NRK2 ) ) every year ? But you´re right, it´s an excellent war movie which is very true to the historical facts. And the Hollywood version "Heroes of Telemark" is one of the worst war movies made ever.
Maybe they do. I don't know. Have'nt seen the movie for, I don't know, 3 years now maybe. And at that time I was'nt so interested in ww2 so I did't copy it. But I later found out I wanted the film, so I tried to get it in normal video shops but did'nt have it. I had to contakt the Norwegian Film Establishment ( Norsk Film Institutt) to get it. Quite expensive... BTW: Anyone seen the BBC-made documentary about the same topic?
Well, for a long time I didn't even know about this event actually happening. When I was first told about it, I wouldn't believe the story...
Saving Private Ryan is my favorite now. Spielberg always goes the extra mile to try to achieve realism. Before SPR, my favs were "Kelly's Heroes" and "Das Boot". Kelly's Heroes also went the extra mile to get every detail right, including authentic Shermans. Add Eastwood, Savalas, other stars.......... Has anyone watched "Band of Brothers"? 10 hours of SPR and based on history!
Watched?? We have the 6-DvD box at home mr! I've seen the series three times front to back AND read the book! Indeed these two recent movies/series are the most realistic war movies ever made, and very well done overall. I am thankful for seeing these movies as well as the old ones, to be able to compare yet get some kind of realistic idea of war.
I've never been in one, but the Ardennes scenes with the artillery barrages are the first time I've been able to appreciate just how nasty it is to be on the receiving end of this firepower. And the soundtrack is superb!
They´re broadcasting "A Bridge Too Far" on TV right now. Plenty of stars; Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins and even our own Liv Ullmann... and Michael Caine... as usual. But what on earth are those tanks the Germans are driving around in ?
You've never seen this movie before? Shame on you Skua. Those German tanks are whatever cheap AFV they could get their hands on with straight plates welded to them... Notice the use of E8 Shermans by the British forces by the way.
More Finnish WW2 -movies: Rukajärven Tie I haven't seen it yet, cant tell if its any good. Tuntematon Sotilas (1955) Tuntematon Sotilas (1985) First of these two movies is better. Sissit I've seen this movie once, about 15 years ago. I did like it back then but I dont know will I like it anymore. Its not well-known movie here in Finland. By the way, I couldn't find The Longest Day from Mutant Poodle's list. I think someone already proposed it.
that's true   :smok: and if they can not identefy an american tanks, is whorst with germans ones
That book/movie are one of the most surreal things I have ever read/seen. And also quite funny. Excellent choice Notmi!
