Is there conscription in Greece? if there is conscription , then your more than likely to bring in some shady characters, which may result in "bullying"
Perhaps not in Greece's case (recently), but they have denied UN peacekeeping overflights in the name of God
Introduction?? Surely this thread is for introducing new members to the Forum, not sniping at each other over past events? Cast your minds back lads, General Grivas and his EOKA didn't do too bad at killing people in Cyprus a few years ago. (Not related to our young General Grevious from Daventry was he?)
Re: Introduction?? Do as I say, don't do as I do? It looks like these two sentences don't fit well together... Welcome, Zeratul. I hope you enjoy these forums - but always be wary of too enthusiastic nationalism, in others and yourself.
Greece Actually my remark was addressed to 'smeghead' and 'Zeratul', meaning that no countries past should be looked at too closely.
I would feel too much obligated if you would explain this a little. Also, Merlin, I second McRis in his question. Feel free to send private messages or post in operations in Greece thread in order not to use this one as a means of private conversation.
whoops Pardon me Zetarul, Merlin creeps back into bunker after having wrist slapped, red-faced and humble. and many thanks for your permission to send private messages; but was it not you and smeg who introduced religion and killing into this thread?
eoka I was trying to point out that Grivas and EOKA who I believe were from Greece killed UN peacekeeping troops in Cyprus, possibly I did not express my self clearly, but now, after having my wrist slapped for the second time, this time by a teenager who wants to 'go to war'; I've decided to keep mouth shut and give further posting a break. Bye Bye. PS. any of my friends who have my email address please feel free to mail me if I can help in any way. Brian.S711. aka. Merlin,tankpark,trackpin,Capt.Mainwaring,Redcoat...usv.
Of course Zeratul! Like Merlin I think that a countries history is its history, and no person should seek to 'rub it in' so to speak when it comes to discussing the past, (unless they were personally involved in the event, as Merlin often is )... In my eyes it is improper to claim one country is 'just better' than another. Your comment... Seems to have been said in order to elevate Orthodox Christianity or Greece (or both) above the level of say 'other countries who have killed in the name of God'... most likely you are refering to Islam and/or "the dammned Turks!" who the Greeks don't really get along with... If i was Turkish I would not have appreciated the statement, so in jest, i thought it necessary to highlight the fact that not even Hellennic foregin policy is perfect by bringing up the incident in Kosovo where Greece denied passage to U.N peacekeepers, because really they wanted the Orthodox Serbs to win... Really the same notch as killing in the name of God in my books. Believe me Zeratyl, I know how patriotic Greeks can get but sometimes it might offend others (like the Turks ) same with any patriotism
As far as Merlin's comment about Grivas is concerned, Grivas, leader of EOKA, was simply trying to liberate Cyprus from english rule. I cannot see how you can blame him for this.
Re: eoka With all due respect I raise you the point that further annotation of my opinion with such a way will not be tolerated. I am expressing an opinion that refers to actions done by myself hurting NOT anyone else. Smeghead, I am not refering to anyone. It was just my mere answer to your post which involved religion. Last, Greece has denied access to UN armies in order to show that we will not stand still while others do their deeds (dirty or not). We are (of course) a proud nation and we will not (for any reason) let anyone to bully us around and do whatever they like on our grounds. PS: It had nothing to do about religious affairs.
Indeed merlin, I do not really see any reason for you to be insulted. Zeratul's opinion is worth as much as anybody else's, no matter what other views he holds. And if he wants an answer to his question, why wouldn't he be allowed to ask for it? I don't see this as a wrist-slap at all...
Well, I hate to break up this discussion with my introduction... 37, Originally from Montana, 10 years US Army, all on tanks starting with the M60A3 as a loader, ending with the M1A1 as a tank commander. Stationed in Korea, Ft. Knox, Germany and Saudi Arabia/Kuwait/Iraq. I was a gunner in the largest tank battle since Kursk (10 points for anyone who can ID that) and have now settled in South Florida where I sell chemicals and help my fellow wounded vets at the VA. My interest with WWII goes back to the stories my grandfather told me about going ashore at D-Day as a grunt and his brothers adventures on tanks starting in North Africa and finishing with the German surrender (sorry grandpa, I would rather ride than walk) I look forward to learning much from the fine folks here, and if I sometimes come across as pushy, it is just the old Staff Sergent coming out. Pay me no mind. I do hope we can get back to a civilized conversation. Merlin, I do not know you, but you have my greatest respect. Please come back and give us more of your unique perspective on our common interest. (Oh, and 10 points to anyone who can guess where my nickname comes from)
