I have been asked to print pictures from the booklet I mentioned in the "Operation Market Garden"subject, it came from the Gebirgsjager Barracks in Innsbruck in 45.The front cover and inside page I have already posted so will attempt to produce a few pics. per day until completed. It follows the adventures of "Toni" a young Jager recruit through Europe, the book finishes in 1941 with a picture of a "Christmas Bunker", after that I don't think there was much time for cartoon books.
A thank you to GP for the "umlaut" info, I do miss my umlaut.
The first pic. (if I do it in correct order will No.Toni 3) so-
    "Jager-Toni reist quer durch Europa"

Thank you so much for this, tankpark. It really is fun, and gies you another perspective on it...

If anyone wants some kind of translation I can try my best. I don't know every word but I can get quite far with a dictionary.

    Here we go...

On a farm in the Alps
    was Tony's cradle.
When Germany invaded Poland (free translation)
    They came for Toni.

The tempo of the dressing room
at first made him very sad
In the barracks he quickly became
    a real Hunter man.

    Shooting made him very happy
There he has a good sight
Fires into the black shot after shot
Just like a Hunter has to shoot

At thirty degrees below, in winter,
A forced march is no small thing
But Hunters still have to do this
Among other inconveniences (not sure here..)

And at last it was time
Toni was ready for the front
The parting was a sad event
    Liesl, she was so sweet!

After a long march Toni was
In the Vogese at the front.
The Black man has to surpress his fear
    He imagines seeing himself hanged

    Border guard duty is interesting
One peers into the neutral land
But the Hunters can't stay long
They have to move deep into France

    Why would Toni then
    stay away from alcohol?
    'Cause French wines taste wonderful,
    Toni's pace may cause suspicion...

    But that's nothing, see
to keep Toni from doing his job! (free translation)
He learns to sail the assault boat
and quickly sails over the lake.

Exactly three quarters of a year have passed
Since Toni was last at home
    And accordingly he's shopping;
    Mabe something has arrived!

I thinking that best Gebirgsjäger divison was SS Prinz Eugen. But I Don't know why they went to Mount Elbrus. It was very unimportant.

Glad you are enjoying it, good translation Roel, you will struggle with some words and expressions because they are Army slang, not only that but also unit slang.Quite a unique booklet, could make a packet on ebay!!!Please, don't let us get into a discussion about which was the best Alpine
Division, that is not the object of these pictures.Anyway, as a bonus three more for today, I think it is quite safe to copy these, the copyright should have run out by now!!!

Ritterkreuz asks, why did they go to Mount Elbrus?
Quite simply because they were mountaineers, if you had asked them they would have given the mountaineers answer,
    "Because it was there!"
May I add a little to Roels excellent translation?the last two verses with the black POW's roughly says,
    "The blacks have surpressed? fear,
That they will be hanged on the Gallows"
    Now, a picture for Ritterkreuz.

Yes, but it was unimportant for german propagand. They were mountain soldiers not mountain climbers.

    Re: Alpine Elite

Thanks! I'm enjoying this very much, and the few expressions I miss (like those of hanged black soldiers) can't spoil it! :D I will correct some things in the previous post, I seem to have missed a verse too.

    Here's the next three:

    Soon thereafter he flies back
    to the Fatherland on leave.
All packed up like Santa Claus
    he walks towards his hometown.

How quickly the holidays fly by!
The woman is full of tenderness
    (Maybe it's only a girl
But who's going to mind?) (free translation)

During the assault on (I really don't know what Walachei means. I'm guessing the Balkans, somewhere, because of the background there.)
    Toni was also there
And he tries, with much swearing,
    to be a proper runner!

Three for Saturday. about half-way through! If you study these cartoons you will find, that because they were drawn by a serving jager there are
little details that you won't see on photographs.Note the nailed climbing boots, edelweiss arm and Mutze. The Gebirgsjagern pictured in this booklet are the original regiment, and were mountain climbers and sky troops.

It's a poem and the original also has rhyme. I try to keep at least some of the rhythm, but English is very different from German so it's hard to do so.

    Here's the Saturday three.

On a beautiful day in March
    The Bridge-building was finished
    and in a happy mood
    Toni moves into the Balkans.

It was so pretty in Bulgaria!
All the people were so friendly
    They greeted, cheering Hurra!
    to the Hunter men.

    Petrohan, the path was called
The way up was cold and wet
Six oxen pulled heavily on the wagon
    but Toni sat comfortably.

Thank you tankpark, I enjoy the challenge. Hope I'm not disappointing Ricky though, who asked for the translation. I only know this one line of British slang, from Band of Brothers: "You must be taking a bath if you think you're half-inching that!" (supposed to mean "you're insane to think you can steal that" or something...)

    Okay, next three.

    The Tommy makes a stupid face;
    he doesn't like being prisoner.
From New Zealand and through Greece
he finds his way to Germany...

In the land of the Greeks there are
lice and roaches in many beds.
    Mosquitoes, too, are terrible
and Toni curses them all night. (free translation)

But there are nice things there too
    That make our Hunters happy
    For example, in Thermopylae,
to bathe in warm water sources.

The village is deserted and left by all humans
and where could you find something to eat?
You need to find yourself a peacock,
    Because peacocks are free game.

And when the last shot has been fired
and when the proud campaign is over
you can see our Toni standing
like a conqueror on the Fortress Athens.

At once a little good-for-nothing came up
    with his "extra-fine shoe shine";
    the mountian boots shine wonderfully
If only the drill-sergeant at home could see it!

you will note by the numbered pictures that I have scanned and posted 30
