I don“t think the Chinese had many tanks, if any at all, when the Japanese invaded. The Chinese did, however, receive Sherman and Stuart tanks from the US during the course of the war, and there might have been encounters between Chinese and Japanese tanks later. I know nothing about it myself, but I would be very interested to learn. Interesting topic.
They did have Vickers 6-ton tanks, and a few others. Obsolete by European standards, but probably able to put up a good fight against the armour fielded by the Japanese.
Chinese tank inventory; FT-17 100 (sources vary from 60 to 170) Carden loyd 100 (M1931/36/MK VI sources vary 80 to 130) Italian CV.33 100 Panzerkampfwagen 1 10 Panzerspahwagen kfz 221/222 unknown Vickers 6-ton 20 T-26 80 (1937-1939) Also BA-6/10/20/27 armoured cars. The chinese built improvised armour on standard trucks in total numbering about 1000. Armament from machinegun to 57mm guns. The tanks and armoured vehicles were owned by warlords and put in action according to their ideas. Warlords fought for money and when the japanese payed more they fought against the nationalists and communists. See war in Manchukwo.
Thanks Anton! Later on in WW2 of course the Nationalists received American equipment, including M3, M4 and M24 (Stuart, Sherman, Chaffee) See here: http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks/ under China for detail
I have seen pictures of Grants in the burma china area but i do no think the Chinese hade little or any armoured divons
Hi. Well, if a type 97 Chi-Ha or Shinhoto Chi-Ha stands against your T-26 you should better run as fast as you can. Yours tom!
russian tanks in china there was almost zero defense against the Japanese tanks. when they ran into russian armor in manchuria thought they got their butts soundly kicked however. for some reason japan never seemed to realize just how bad their tanks were but then again they had few oppertunites to use them.
Japanese tanks weren't built to fight other tanks, they were built to support infantry in typically Japanese campaigns: either on small islands or against inferior enemies, and using the extremely well-trained infantry as the main force in everything.
True - it is too big to completely conquer with only the Japanese army (too small), especially with communist guerillas attacking your supply lines. Their campaigns would probably have run faster, and been more successful than they were, but ultimately it was space that defeated Japan in China. Better armour would have been an asset facing the Allies though. Even the Stuart remained a credible threat to the Japanese through the whole war, while Matildas were practically invulnerable still. Now think what effect a horde of T34/85's had...
hi, i dunno if it's true but i have normally heard that in the middle stages of the war, Chinese Army normally fought to the last men or something like that, would like to confirm.
I don't know, but it seems possible - I'm sure you can guess what would happen to them if they surrendered to the Japanese.
Nice thread here. Japanese tanks were not bad, they were designed to fight in jungles and other confined environments and did their job superbly. Japanese tanks are noted for their excellent realibility. Anyways, here is a picture of a Chinese Sherman:
Say, the gun looks destroyed Zhukov..... YEa i would rather fight to the last man to than stick ard in a japanese cell...no wait! They won't imprison me,they'll ask me to dig a ditch and then shoot me and bury me in it..... Yea,i watched this show in Chinese where the KMT army and the Japs fought over this bridge..but the KMT army was armed with sabres and so it was a bloody battle which undoubtedly left the Chinese destroyed.
