Hey im new at here but i have one question. Like year ago i saw a documentary from discovery channel, wich was about one german tank. It was a size of 3 or 4 tigers and it has HUGE i mean HUGE cannon, dont know if it was size like sturmtiger but it was huge. im not sure was it documentary of tank that they intended to do, or was it allready made. This tank was supposed to help nazis win war on russian front. Sorry i cant give any specific details, i havent found any pictures from anywhere but i just need to know
Hy and welcome Mooner It might have been the "MAUS". Btw the SturmTiger was no bigger than the other Tiger-I variants, as it was based on the Tiger-I chassis.. Here's a picture of the MAUS.... is this one your talking about ???
no it wasnt maus, it was even bigger... hope that discovery channel will do replay of that document sometime, ill keep searching, ill let u know if i find a pic of that...
Bigger than the Maus?? The only other 'Supertank' I know of is the E-100, which (although the subject of much controversy & debate on here) is very definately smaller than the Maus. It is possible that there were ridiculously huge tank designs on the drawing board, but I think none were produced. Just to be pedantic - are you sure it was a tank, not a tank-destroyer? I do remember seeing a photo somewhere (wish I could remember where!!) of American troops standing in the empty hull of a vehicle that appeared to be a scaled-up Elefant / Ferdinand. Did the Discovery Channel show any pictures of the vehicle? If so, what did it look like? Did it have a turret? Where was the gun mounted? Was the gun long or short-barrelled? Oh, and welcome to the forum! I hope we can be of help... 8)
ISTR seeing some drawings of a monster tank of around 1,500 tons mounting a turret with two 11 inch battlecruiser guns. Just the sort of thing to appeal to Hitler... Tony Williams: Military gun and ammunition website and Discussion forum
heres some more pics of it, only would like to have more info off topic a little some color pics from some museum http://www.xenophongi.org/rusarmy/kubinka/ BTW what the heck is this?
I don't know but it looks like an escapee from a Hollywood film. Seems to have a Panzer II turret on top. :-? Werid.
It was an experimental mine-clearance vehicle. Basically a small hull, high off the ground, with incredibly heavily armoured wheels & 'tracks' & suspension to detonate mines & survive. The 'wheels' were basically big wheels with large steel 'shoes' on. these shoes acted a bit like normal caterpillar tracks would, and were designed to be the only part damaged by the mine. The vehicle was designed to be able to loose several of there 'shoes' and still move. The turret was there as this vehicle had a similar purpose to the Sherman 'flail' tanks - mine clearance under fire. Edit - prototype only - never used.
Mooner, Hauptmann, welcome to the forum! The vehicle you were looking for isn't a tank but a "mobile" super heavy mortar, nicknamed "Karl". This was a 600mm or 60cm mortar on tracks, used to bring down heavy fortifications like those on the Russian naval base of Sevastopol. It had a top speed of around 12 km/h and was self-propelled, unlike the vehicle in the movie you posted, which was a railroad gun.
I'll be in Moscow in a few weeks and I intend to stop in at Kubinka Museum and a lot of other places. I have some of me in Belgorod but I can't get them on the site. How do you upload a JPEG pic from My pictures to here. I have Windows XP. I am also a beginner with computers. I am one of those people that wait 10 years before I buy the latest fad.
