the main caracteristic was the ability to providde a surface so irregular that will casue the magnetic mines to fail to grab the metal, on contrary to the allied inteligence that it was an antimagnetic material from dec 29 1943 it was aplied to the pz III,pz IV , panther, tiger, stug's jagpanzer 38 and panzerjager hornisse
remote!!!!! btw once the germans belive the zimmerit will ignite if hit by any round and stoped using it!!!!
the zimmerit was produced by a company called Zimmer the chemical comsition was: 40% barium sulphate 25% polyvinyl acetate 15% ochre pigment 10% saw dust 10% zinc sulphide
However, us unsporting Allies never really used magnetic charges in the quantities the Germans thought we would, so it was all a bit of a wasted effort, really.
High tech. 8) This is a quite interesting topic, all I knew about the stuff was that it was a late-war German invention to make magnetic mines ineffective. I didn't know how it worked, or that earlier tanks than the Tiger series also had it added to them.
Yeah - they slapped it onto most of their tracked armoured vehicles, not just the tanks - the Sturmtiger, for example, or the Brummbar (yes Christian, I know! )
The sturmtiger? Really? THE sturmtiger? Does that mean my model of the sturmtiger is actually historically incorrect? Please tell me that's a joke.. I was so proud on that machine!
just remember that the germans were forced due the constant bombing , to design new techologies like syntetic oil from coal, wood burning engines, among others
Of course. Actually I just picked out that little element of the stuff because I did know what it was; all the rest I haven't got a clue (except for the pigment, of course). If it weren't for the sawdust it would have looked extremely high tech to me.
I think PVA (polyvinyl acetate) is a glue. Not really sure but that seems right. Thanks fellas, this has been very helpful.
I'm thinking you are correct. They probably used it to hold the sawdust and other materials together. I wonder how weather affected it?
From my upcoming improved article on Zimmerit (for now, see <http://www.panzerworld.net/zimmerit.html>)
Hello. It is not necessary to worry Panzerprofile , there were " Sturmtiger" with or without zimmerit. Patrice
