Just Guess what all those tracks were fore ! So it wouldnt turn over in a "Nuclear-explosion" !!  I mean the Soviets have had some wierd ideas and concepts, but this is one of the more "Unique" ones !
Didn't this picture appear in a quiz somewhere? I think I've seen it before but I can't recall the context.
All I know about this tank is that the idea was to make a low ground-pressure tank. This was in 1960's.
That´s correct, the tracks were there to reduce the ground-pressure. It was the shape of the hull that would keep the tank from being overturned by the shockwave from a nuclear explosion. The tank was far from a failure btw, the reason it never entered production was because it was found to be too complex and expensive.
They have one of these in Kubinka and if I ever get there I intend to look it over real close. The tank was made to be not only able to survive on a nuclear battlefield but to utilize the swampy muddy terrain found in Russia. A good thought but just not practical. The Russians are quite innovative when they need to be.
