The strangest (and to me one of the more revolting and inhumane!) of all l AT weapons were the Russian "Dog Mines"" of which l first learned while reading a book by Curzio Malaparte called "Kaput!"- he was an Italian war correspondent on the Eastern Front-with a very fluid, readable style..As l remember it, he was attached to a German aromored formation in Russia.. . After the Germans camped for the night, a distant barking was heard-as Malaparte describes it "suddenly the Germans became very agitated and shouted to each other "Die Hunden ! Die Hunden!" ( the dogs! the dogs" and as the dogs approached, the troops opened up at them with everything they had..Malaparte thought they had gone nuts, but then he saw several German tanks exploding..It seems that the Russians trained dogs of all descriptions to receive their ussual feed uner parked tanks. Once they were trained, a satchel-mine would be attached to their backs . When the dogs crawled under the German tanks, the antena would trigger the mine with the resulting fireworks..The method worked at first, but then someof the dogs came back and tried to find food under Russian tanks...,blowing up a number of these as well, this"AT" weapon was (mercifully! ) abandonned...

I heard differently. The idea was kicked around by all of the powers but deemed unreliable because of the unpredictable dogs. What I believe it was is a rumour that circulated amongst troops and being paranoid about it the germans were killing dogs on sight.

All a bunch of rumours and hype.

The Germans did have to worry about the Russian field mice though. They loved chewing the insulation of the tanks wiring.

I have also heard in writings from the west that Russians cut up their babies and make stews for their holiday celebrations.

Who are you to believe? From my experience the Russians may have considered such a thing but it was not put into practice. I have seen dogs in pics (they look more like wolves) with little backpacks and long ago I saw an article in a book where dogs were used as ammocarriers and messengers. One again they weren't that reliable.

Anyone can imagime the scenario where Oleg and Ivan are valiantly holding off a company of German infantry and are on their last box of ammo.

They dispatch the heroic mutt to get more, he makes it to the depot and halfway back only to get stuck on one of the local bitches.

From what l've been able to establish, Malaparte seems to have been a faithful chronicler of what he saw, sometimes at the risk of of his own life-and under the noses of Gestapo enforcers, he managed to get food parcels and smuggle etters to people in Warsaw-l have no reason to doubt his account of the dog mines. but l've also spoken with German, Romanian and Russian WW2 vets, and according to them, the use os dog mines is not a myth:..There's even an entry for them in an Ellis and Chamberlain book on anti-tank weapons..

i do not doubt that, i read about them many years ago, the russian trick the dogs to eat under a running tank, so when they go to combat no rations for the dog, relese them and went up the tanks, germans and russians too!!
thay 's why the discontinue the use of their dogs :D

I wonder what would happen, if you strapped explosives to the back of an airport security dog...

This is a bit off topic perhaps, but the first message I ever posted on this forum was about dog-mines. Well, sorry for that slightly nostalgic interruption. Please carry on.

Wow, yes, I remember that! See, I thought we'd been through this before, but that was in the proto-forum, the neanderthaler of the Tanks in WW2 Forums. :D

Definitely this time we get a lot more good info and a lot less guesswork, now carry on please! :)
