I was thinking about some kind of disaster like the engine breaking or (more likely given the date) a storm knocking out the masts.

    But now...

Somehow the crew (and flag) were induced to abandon ship?

This one is VERY close. The flag never appeared on the mast, however.

EDIT: I mean dave's answer. Ricky's is not very far from the truth either.

If within an hour nobody gives a more precise answer, I'll give you the details and let dave ask his question.

Ah, I'm waiting patiently for the answer - and dave's question.

Time came, Dave's answer is accepted.

    How it really was:
The ship successfully went through the Strait of Gibraltar. The commander decided that they needed to replenish their supplies and to do that they went to Ceuta (whis is in Morocco, but has been under Spanish control since 1580). There the ship and crew were arrested (to tell the truth, I didn't accept dave's answer because for me "capturing" of a ship takes place at sea, but I may be wrong; correct me then). The crew was eventually released, but without the ship. What happened to it - I don't know.

And why did it happen? A Russian emissary in London found out about the Poles' plan and notified his government which subsequently ordered its emissaries in countries of the Mediterrenean to do everything possible to stop the Poles if they appeared in any of these countries. The Russians in Spain appeared to be very convincing, unfortunately... and it would be more than enough to raise the flag in international waters and enter Ceuta with it on the mast.

I wonder why they did not simply raise the flag as soon as the ship was in international waters? Why wait for the Med? Better yet, if you are supposed to be showing the British that you are a nation, why not sail into Portsmouth flying your flag?

That's exactly the thing everybody is wondering about and in fact nobody knows. Even arresting the ship in Ceuta wouldn't be bad had it been commited on a Polish ship - there would certainly be documents confirming that the ship had a Polish flag.

    Um... the Bren?

Do you meant the British Indian Army (pre-Independance) or the Indian army (post-Independance)?

Bren L4 is what I have found (Wikipedia, I'm afraid)
    Along with the Browning M2
Indian Army websites gloss over the actual historical equipment.
