Creighton Abrams, American tank commander who gave the current American MBT its name. Served in gradually more developed versions of the Sherman throughout the war (and ended it in number 8). I don't know how many kills he had.

    tank aces

Some tankers became known. Perhaps most known is Lieutenant Dmitriy Lavrinenko, who scored 52 victories in 28 engagements before he was killed defending Moscow in 1941 while serving in the division under command of General Panfilov.
Dmitriy Lavrinenko > was born in 1914 in a small village near Krasnodar. Probably, the name of the village, Besstrashnaya/Fearless, reflected in Dmitriy. Totaling 52 kills, Lavrinenko started his count under Orel and Mzensk. 3 tanks were killed under him in process. In October of 1941 his T-34 destroyed 16 German tanks in a single combat.
Lavrinenko was honored the Hero of the Soviet Union in 1985 (!).

Dashinskiy (in picture) posing with his KV. On 3 October 1942 Dashinskiy destroyed 6 tanks, 18 guns, 6 mortars and a few dozens of infantry in the battle in the Don area.

Zinovij Kolobanov in his KV claimed a record on 19 August 1941 under Leningrad by destroying in 3 hours combat 22 German tanks. KV withstood 135 hits.

On 13 July 1943 Semen Konovalov in his KV destroyed under Rostov/Don 16 tanks, 2 armored cars, 8 trucks.

Interesting to see that Pool was involved in 21 full scale battles by Sept. 1944. Good thing for him that he wasn't allowed to fight on one leg!

Did he fight in WW2? I think that's supposed to be what the topic is about.

    Lt.Col. George Forty.

I thought I'd noticed his name without rank in a previous posting on this thread.

Yes, you're right, he was the author of that book. Excuse me.

Is it necessity or courtesy to name a man's rank when mentioning him as an author?

Yes, as far as I'm concerned if the author is a genuine tank man who has fought in tanks and knows what he is writing about, yes, he is entitled to the rank he has earned.
I think 32 years in the RAC entitles him to some respect., and courtesy.

No disrespect intneded. I copied directly from the 3rd AD site, which does not mention Lt Col Forty's rank. Apologies to all.

Edit: I should have known better as I have several of Lt Col Forty's (excellent) books. He seems to be that rarest of Brits, one who actually admires the US Army of WWII (or an other era).

    Lafayette Pool versus Michael Wittman

It is interesting to see that whereas Wittman is stated to have destroyed about 100 plus tanks and a similar number of anti tank guns, those who would have us believe that Lafayette Pool was Wittman's equal can only state that Pool destroyed a similar number of "vehicles". Given that these could easily include soft transports that pose little or no threat to a tank,
I'd put my money on Wittman and his tally of serious anti tank units detroyed as being the far more significant figure. Indeed, I have seen it quoted that Pool and his crew only managed to destroy twelve tanks.

Don't get me wrong, I take no pleasure in disparaging American claims, but as "masters of spin", they just cannot be bettered !!!!!!

In the end the German tank aces are probably going to have the highest amount of kills no matter how many Allied aces we bring up. This has a few simple causes:
    a) The Germans, on average, had the best AT guns of the war.
    b) The Germans, pretty much throughout the war, were faced with more tanks than they posessed themselves, and so they had more targets. Add to this the fact that several German tank aces owe their high kill scores to attacking columns by surprise, and all these kills make perfect sense.
