Don't dash my hopes and crush my illusions so easily please The things that al amin is pointing out exists everywhere to some extent..most people are able to put them in perspective. Older Hollywood movies are the worst. The American hero fired from the hip, never getting more than a scratch as hundreds of evil Germans fell dead. Just because such nonsense exists doesn't mean that intelligent people will buy into such comic book and movie nonsense.
Yes but the majority of people is stupid or not interessted in WW2. They don´t wanna know the truth and believe that what they hear and see in films& comics. I can hear all those bullsh*t every day in germany, when (pseudo)historians defame the history of german military and how bad germany was bla bla... And normal people who have other intentions believe that.
yeah simon the germans where avrage a few good things but most stuff average that way it took the world three superpowers and a whole bunch of other nations to bring germany down look man and try to undersrtand i dont say that the germans are a master race or übermensch but they had simply the most effectiv Military power of their time point
Right, but this was a comment aimed at me, about how I was essentially blinkered by British wartime propaganda, not the majority of people and not people who do not "Want to know the truth". I wish to show that I am not blinkered and I am someone who does not believe what they see in films, comics, or necessarily for that matter books,. I form my own opinions. Independant of propaganda whether it be German, British or otherwise.
No. They deliberately took on three superpowers, two of which were also trying to take on the Japanese simultaneously. 3/2 doesn't make the Germans seem that impressive.
Che wrote: The people who push that and the collective guilt nonsense are as bad as those who believed in the master race BS IMO. If you want to find things to be proud of as a German you won't have to look very far; art, literature, philosphy, music, architecture, science and of course all things military. There is a difference however between German culture and race. Most of the Brits, essentially all the Scandinavians, a significant portion of the French and Italians and Americans are descended from northern Germanic peoples. German culture, of course(as opposed to race) has some significant differences when compared to the aforementioned people, some of them good, some not so good however aside from Hitler and the Nazi nuts I personally think that German culture has contributed a lot more positive things to the world than negative. ps..President Roosevelt, general Eisenhower and Admiral Nimitz (formerly Von Nimitz) were all of direct German descent as were about a third of the American troops.
pff come on simon the only ones who realy dispatched large naval and army formation to the pto were the usa you cant count the few britsh troops and ships compared to the usa
lôl, you forgot the japs ^^ At first there were more brits then yankees in the pto. 85.000 english soldiers in Singapure and these were more then 29.000 us-soldiers a half year later in guadalcanal. I guess themen, who fights on guadalcanal were the first americans in the pto ?!
You discount the Chinese, the Indians, the South East Asians, the Australians and the New Zealanders? The battle against the Japanese was more than just the PTO Al Amin. Most of the Japanese armed forces, especially the Army was tied up in China, not against the US.
the indians aussi kiwis fought also against the germans in the eto even with more troops than in the pto simon
Right. Your point is? The fact is the efforts of the Allies had to be divided between the Axis as a whole Al Amin, not just Germany, although Germany was made the prioirty. You can't claim that Germany took on the whole of the Allies alone. They did not.
yeah but to express it in percantage germany had to take on 80% of Britains strenght 100% of russia and another 60-70 % from the usa so germany had to take the most
And how exactly does this prove that Germans were naturally better than the men and women of other nations? Or how exactly that they provided the equipment that was the future of warfare?
Simon wrote: I don't discount the British/Commonwealth contribution to the war against Japan however what you say is somewhat misleading. Most of the Japanese armed forces were not in China, just most of the ground forces. The Imperial Japanese Navy and the majority of the Army air forces were engaged in the PTO as were the cream of the ground forces. The CBI theatre was a relatively low intensity war for the majority of the war..the exception being the Kohima/Imphal battles for which Genral Slim and his British and Indian troops deserve a lot of credit. Despite the victory it would be another year before the Japanese were driven from Burma. Brilliant campaign that it was it wasn't about to put paid to the Japanese war effort. That was, of course, a direct result of operations in the PTO.
I stand corrected, the majority of the Japanese Army was in China and South East Asia, not the Japanese armed forces as a whole. That said I remain to be convinced how this show the inherent superiority of the German over the Anglo-Saxon, Anglo American or Slavic man.

 I am an unhappy person. I thought that we had got past all this. Right, to re-cap. 1) German soldiers in WW2 on average did often perform better than their opponants. Most sensible historians, military experts etc put this down to their superior training and the greater emphasis placed on NCOs in the German army. 2) Some German equipment was superior in some respects to some Allied equipment - but the reverse is also true. 3) Yes, British (and American, I suppose, although I have not as much experience of this) comics, films etc show a handful of plucky Brits (and/or Americans) defeating the entire German army, and yes, the young & impressionable can believe this if that is all they are exposed to. I used to when I was a kid. But most of us on here have at least a passing interest in the era and have studied it. We know that propaganda and kids comics are not terribly reliable. Hopefully this will form a suitable end to this discussion.
