What do you thinkis the best ww2 movie? 1. 2.Cross of Iron 3.Longest Day 4.Enemy at the Gates 5.Saving Private Ryan 6.Battle of Britian 7. A bridge to far 8.The Bridge at Remagan 9.DAS BOOT 10.Saints and Soldiers
I think Enemy at the Gates is more or less a swear-word on here . One you haven't listed, there was a German film "Stalingrad" from the Mid-1990s, a pretty good film and one of the better WWII films IMHO. Battle of Britain is good for the actual footage of WWII warbirds (Even if the Luftwaffe are all CASA He111s or Hispano Buchons), although the film itself I think is pretty lacking in most other respects. What about Dambusters? A classic in every regard.
Number one should be "When Trumpets Fade". Probably the most realistic war movie I have ever seen, and every minute of it screams "in your face" to Saving Private Ryan. You seem to have rather liked Saints and Soldiers, I thought it was terrible. It's dull, historically inaccurate and badly acted. Mostly wasted potential if you ask me.
I found "Memphis Belle" to be a good movie , and as Roel mentioned "When trumpetts fade" was also a great movie , allthough it wasn't commerciallly successful. I suppose the public was still hyped from Saving Private ryan to notice "when trumpetts fade"
yes i think when trumpets fade was very good. I have to agree on switching out saints and soldiers. I had forgoten about it. That is one of the few movies where germans are not totaly stuipd. You know that scene in saints where those two guys pretty much wipe out that platoon of germans i thought that ws really in accurate, it was almost rambo and his side kick take on the germaqn army. hahah
Its very inacurette. The german sniper never existed and a russian vetaran orginisathion complaned about how the red army was potrayed. It was very anti-russian and went overbourd on a lot of things.
That part of the movie where vassili and that dude with the metal teeth are in the building, and the guy with the metal teeth raises a helmet over a window and they both wait for that german to shoot it , but he dosen't. In reality when that helmet was raised the german sniper shot it, the guy who raised the helmet screamed, and Vassili shot the german. They pretty much took a real life story and stretched it out , and added a love interest, and a best friend who likes the same chick vassili does.
I can't remember this scene from Saints and Soldiers at all. Most of it didn't include any action, just guys wandering around behind enemy lines looking for food and shelter and trying to remain out of sight.
I prefer Das Boot, very realistic and it is in German which makes it more believable. Imagine, Germans speak English to each other, what a load of rubbish
I agree with most people that When Trumpets Fade is the best film but there are alot of really good ones out there depending on taste. Personal (even though they did make a film) Dads Army will always have a place in my heart for probably the best world war 2 comedy of all time(the series)
All Quiet on the Western Front? Here are my top ten: 1). Cross of Iron 2). Enemy at the Gates 3). Stalingrad 4). Devil's Brigade 5). Saving Private Ryan 6). Band of Bothers (Ok so its a series, damn good though) 7). Where Eagles Dare 8). The Battle of Britain 9). Das Boat 10). The Great Escape tied with Colditz
saving private ryan,a bridge too far and there is more i also like the movie battle of the buldge even though it is historically inacurate
Hi. My favourite is "Tora,Tora,Tora". Not totally realistic but very interesting pictures of WWII carrier service and japanese carrier aircraft. Yours tom!
I'm sorry. I've seen Enemy at the Gates at least six times and have not seen a single anti-Russian shot or heard a single such comment besides those in the German HQ and those from German mouths. And there weren't many times like that. As for the love story, there isn't all that much of one, just a sex scene which was thrown in to satisfy the majority of the male audience. The only other WWII movies i ever saw were Saving Private Ryan, Das Boot and Battle of the Bulge. Both I found well done, however historically inaccurate Battle of the Bulge may be, I liked it. Das Boot was a fairly accurate flick about the life of a submariner. And Saving Private Ryan had more gore in the first 20 minutes than most horror movies these days in three hours.
