family in the war

does someone here had relativs who fought in the war????
My grandfather fought at the ardennes

 

Ooh, now I'm interested! For which country did he fight, and what unit was he in?

 

I have one uncle that was killed when his Lancaster was shot down and another that was killed when his spit was shot down in Italy.

 

A few of my Grandparents relatives were killed/fouight in the war

One was a tanker in the 44th Armoured Brigade.(killed during the war in N Africa)
One was a rear gunner in a Lanc and surivived the war but died shortly after in a motorbike accident
One was a commando in Norway and had his jaw shot off but I believe he survived
And I Believe I had 2 relatives who died in Normandy.
My Grandmother(my dads side) worked on the railway
My Grandfather(dads side again) signed up for the army but was quickly taken out of service when the found out he was a carpenter and he spent the war fitting ships and working on the Mullbery harbours.
Both grandparents on my mums side were children during the war

I don't dare to ask him because he always gets upset when you bring up the subject of the war.


a little info: he was in a german prison for al long time but than he wasn't a private anymore... I do not know wich rank but I think I can ask my dad

when he was sick he typed out a part of his wherabouts in the war I have a copy of those at home I can translate some sections if you want?

I had 2 relatives who fought in the second world war 2. An uncle on my dads side of the family , and a grandfather on my moms side of the family.

My grandfather joined the canadian military at the age of 16 , in 1939. The local unit was an armoured unit , so he became an armoured soldier. From '39 to '42 he didn't see any action because the canadian army hadn't been put into battle. In 1943 he first saw action as a tank gunner in Italy, probably in a sherman tank. He remained a tank gunner for the rest of the war. Through the rest of the war , he saw action in France , Belgium , the netherlands , and germany. He was also promoted and demoted from the rank of sergeant 3 times. He was demoted all three times for drunkeness.

My uncle was an american infantry soldier during the war , and was part of the famous 1st Infantry Division. I don't know a lot about him , except for the theatres of combat , and some battles he fought in. The theatres of combat he fought in were North Africa, and western and central europe. The only battles I know he fought in were Hurtgeon Forest , and D-day. After Germany's defeat he was sent to the pacific for an invasion of Japan. As we all know, the invasion didn't go ahead.

My grandmother's brothers joined up. One went to the Army Air Corps and the other went in the Navy.

 

My Dad worked at Bletchley Park for much of the war (2nd Lt / Lt in the Intelligence Corps). My Mum, Auntie and Grandma were in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation of the colony.

I had a couple uncles that served in the Pacific campaigns.
One was in New Guinea. He was never the same man after returning.
The second uncle hit the beach at Guam. He also survived the war.
My Uncle Harry served with a B-26 Marauder outfit based in Belgium.

One of my ancestors rode with Cromwells Cavalry at Naseby.June 1645.
Our Jack. 13/18th.Hussars. DDay in DD's , wounded later, demobbed 46.
Our Ted. 82nd. AA. Airbourne, N.Africa, Italy, Europe.
My dad. Aux.fire Service/Nat.fire Service.
My wifes brothers, both on Russian Convoys.

My father was a US Marine( as I was and my two brothers also) He served in the Pacific. Okinawa was the only major campaign he was involved in.

 

some new additions wich I heart last night from my mother...

I was pleasantly surpised I heart that my grandfather was part of the headstaff of the belgian resitance!!!!!!!! and I have proove my dad says hes has a couple of medaills for that... and at the end of the war there was a (private) trial against war criminals and my grandfather was there!
and the belgian king leopold III ran away during the war after he talked to hitler so he was at that trial too and my grandfather said he was crying...

I will continue to find more about this subject the next time I visit my grandmother and my aunt.

I've been looking on the internet (damm, we have very few pages about WW2. looks like nobody in our country is interested in that part of our history) and i found some pages.
could you please give me your grandfathers name. maby i can find something about him on the internet.

 

Several relatives of mine fought in WW1
My mothers grandfather was killed in Champagne.

My grandfather was in a mechanised regiment in in WW2, and was wounded in late may 1940 near Bantigny(north-western France).
His brother was in an infantry division.

An uncle of mine was in the war in Algeria where he apparently got to know a certain Lieutnat Chirac....
