    French Surcouf was similiar. Choppy seas could make takeoff pretty tricky.

    Toward the end of the war, there was a plan to use these subs to takes planes to the west coast of the US and drop germ-warfare bombs over california. Code named, Cheery Blossoms at Night.

    There was also a plan to use them to attack and disable the Panama Canal toward the end of the war.
