So...what's the best grenade? I read that the British military still makes use of the Mills Pinapple grenade (likely more powerful than in WW2) so one could say that that is it. I mean if it's remained in large use into today's standards....that's gotta say something about it right?

I believe the Mills grenade is not used anymore, at least not as standard British military equipment. It was replaced more than 20 years ago by the L2, which is similar to the current US Army grenade. It's in heavy use by the India's army though.

Impact fuzes on grenades are an advantage (or at least they're superior in Operation Flashpoint), such as those on the Russian RGO hand grenade and the obsolete RGD-5.

http://www.inert-ord.net/jap02h/grenades/t3/index.html states that the Type 3 had a very precarious saftey. I can't even imagine the disaster that would follow this weapons premature detonation. (damn link codes do not work for me! )

Tom!, do you know if this weapon was considered successful?

    fuses

I think, open to correction, that the '36' fuses I can remember were of 4 and 7 seconds, and were not made to be dismantled, I have never seen or used American grenades so can't discuss them. I believe the'36' was in use at least until 1972.

when i was a teenager living in okinawa i was out in the boonies with my brothers...i was up in a tree shooting cicadas{giant bugs] with a home made blow gun{video games hadnt been invented yet} any way, im up in a tree ..my littlest brother david says "whoa kool, whats this?...i look down to see him kicking .....at an old rusty cast iron us pineapple grenade... which is half buried in the dirt...i yelled NO DAVE!...and scrunched my butt mucsles so hard ,i couldnt walk right for a week...it turned out to be an empty schell ...a quarter of it was gone ,it ws full of dirt ....my dad {a col. usa..ordinance} went all grey in the face when he heard the storie...it woulda been a clean sweep ,4 sons in one blast...for many years i had it on my desk..it made a kool ashtray..i have no idea where it is today...it still makes my butt sore ,thinkin about it....okinawan farmers and schoolboys were still being blown to bits with some regularity then{1971} ...i bet they still are, too.... i used to have a bag full of war relics found in caves about the island...i think my mom prolly through all my kool rusty stuff away when i moved out...you know how moms are....

sounds a bit like the minefields out on the Falklands. Must have been an interesting childhood! Was the stuff mostly Japanese or American?

all the stuff in the caves seemed to be japanese, gas masks ,shrivelled leather boots containing small bones ..a curved mg magazine ..like for a bren gun...those caves were really creepy ...giant centipedes on the ceilings were especially nerve wraking..looking back i wish i had done alot more spelunking...such practice was ,of course strictly forbiden by my dad...old rusty ordinance being suprisingly volitile...if you thjink about it ,g.i.s prolly stuck nothing in a cave exept a flame thrower nozzel,if they could help it...the masks and boots turned into dust or chewtoys when california humidity change occured...wish is still had that grenade tho...

I have read about them in the first-hand accounts I've seen - they sound nasty, and their bite is very painful.

Terrifying little buggers (pun intended I think?).

And moderators yes, the talk about centipedes fits in here well, as I would want nothing less than the best grenade of WWII in my hand when walking through an Okinawan cave filled with monstrous centipedes. :D

Zhukov, forget the granades, just use a damm flamethrower (and an extra advantage is that you also have some light :D )

    Grenades

Newly released pics. of 'Secret 36 Mills Bomb'. No need to throw, this little beauty runs along on its own while older grenades look on in envy.

you could pull the pin and then throw it?

If it's a practise one then you just go and get it back, if it's real you get to see a live nade go off.

    It's a Win Win situation
