is that a ww2 photo? anyway, the mg looks like a vickers which rules out the germans. The russians used vickers i believe FNG
ya its a ww2 pic im most certain but it was in a german picture section but the vicker mg was used by the russians but it coould be captured
why would the germans use it? MG34/42's were common as muck in the german army, in my opinion better than the vickers, and they had plenty of ammo for it as it took their standard rifle round. FNG
Why would they use a Vickers, and more importantly, why would they use a water-cooled MG in those conditions?
I think I seen this picture to im not sure were but possibly at WWIIincolour. The Germans are known for using captured equipment. For example some units used the wz.38 machine gun during the invasion of Poland. Why they would be using it in those conditions? I donnno i think the gun could still operate in the winter if not they no one woulda used it during WWII.
water cooled guns are way more accurate...those guys got to cover a great expanse of water and the gun is staying right there ....air cooled guns are better if you have to hump them around the country side alot cause they weigh a lot less.
Is that true? As far as I know, all machine guns by the end of WW2 were air-cooled. For the Germans this switch was accelerated when they found that their water-cooled MGs froze up in the Russian winter of 1941.
Anti-freeze. Second class German divisions, such as static coast defense and fortress units, frequently used captured equipment, including MGs.
water cooled mgs were still in use in the us army when my dad went through ocs...as an ordinance officer he was against the phaseing out of water cooled guns..(i think it was the heavy water jacket that made them so much more accurate...also the barrel stays lots cooler and dosnt distort....mg sections in the us army were horse mobile into the late 30s...makes sense when you consider the heavy load....
the M2 .50 cal had a water cooled varient. I suppose with a bit of though and jury rigging any fixed MG could be water cooled though the MG 42/34 weren't FNG
the M1917A1 Browning .30 was still used during the war for fire support but I believe it was replaced by the air cooled M1919 variants and saw little use.
Yes it could have been captured or it could be the MG 08, which was almsot a direct copy of Maxim's watercooled mg.
The picture is of Germans from Norway (Northern Norway, IIRC). I have seen it before in a book on the occupation. It could well have been a captured Norwegian MG.
