A pic I have in a book about the US Army shows an armoured Jeep in use with the 82nd Airborne Division, armed with a 50-cal. Browning.

Sorry I can't post the pic, but was this an official armour kit or a one off field conversion?

AFAIK it was official - is it semi-circular armoured windscreens for the driver & passenger, with a .5 Browning (or other gun) for the passenger?

Merlin can tell you more about these, as he knows some people who have restored just such an armoured jeep...

No, I know which one you're thinking of. But this was something else. The whole compartement was covered by armour plates, frontal plates slightly sloped, and making the vehicle quite tall. It looks very purpose built, but I could have done it myself without too much difficulty.

Like this one (La Gleize Museum).

    It was a field conversion.

I beleive that the armor plates were taken from, think it might have been the 57mm anti-tank gun. The book the Longest Winter mentions one of these armoured jeeps.

Nice idea who ever thought of it back then, cause it probably saved lives.

Hi Patrice, that's exactly the one I saw in my book. Thanks.
