... for a while. Thursday the 24th I'll be going to South Africa for a year on a student exchange, and won't have Internet access at my host family. I think I will at my school, but I don't think I will have much time. I'll post today and tomorrow. It has been great being a part of this forum and I have gone from almost total ignorance to having a good understanding of WW2 tanks. To quote Arnold: "I'll be back..."
Have a good time you'll enjoy Africa (I came back from Uganda 4 weeks ago), You'll be surprised about the number of of net cafes out there, but enjoy it, been good seeing you here.
Panzerman, it has been righteously awesome getting to know you and I do wish you a bombass time in South Africa. Excellent job revieving the create-a-tank game sir.
hope that you can enjoy that experience and learn a lot!!!! do not worry , a year will pass fast, and you will be back soon!!!! good luck and also have some fun!!!! we are going to miss you!!!!
Yeap have a good time in South Africa and have a good time while you are there. Its been nice knowing you, even for the short time Ive been on this forum; but I wish you all the best in your journeys. Mic
Short update, as I have some minutes in an Internet cafe. I arrived on Friday and went to a backpackers hotel with the other exchange students. I made a bunch of friends there - it was cool meeting people from all over the world. For some reason, the Germans wouldnt speak English, just German to each other, so they were the exception. I got picked up by my host family on Sunday. They are lower middleclass, living in Soweto struggling hard and getting by, both parents working hard to give their children a good education. They are extremely hospitable. Compared to Norwegians who have a lot but give a little, they are the opposite - they have little and give what they can absolutely. Milk is a luxury. Okay, I gotta go. Tell you about school later
Great to hear from you Panzerman! good to hear all is going well, and hope to hear from you again soon.
I've heard something like that a few days back from a co-worker. Apparently in certain parts of Africa (white) guests are treated like royalty. My co-worker even spoke of a wedding being postponed until she and her family arrived. Chances are you'll have a good time, or at least I hope you will.
Really Stix? There are 3 diffeent race groups in South Africa. White, Coloured, and Black. The coloured and black were always discriminated by the whites when they ran the country and now many blacks hate the whites. I dont remember what the guy said about colored it was almost a year ago.
All I've got is the account from my co-worker, I have no idea of the exact where, why, how, who and how true.
Thats rings true when i visited Uganda earlier this summer, They give as much as they can of what little they have.
Quite uniquely in history, when the repressed black population of South Africa was finally freed of Apartheid, they did not turn the whole thing about and did not start repressing whites. It seems they don't hold that much of a grudge against the white race as a whole, which would be ludicrous anyway. Panzerman, it's great to hear that you're having a good time so far. I hope you can pop in now and then to tell us the news.
Gunter, there are actually four race groups in South Africa. Whites, Blacks, Colored, and Indian. None of the race groups "hate" another --- I am treated very well in Soweto. In fact, I cannot complain. The warmness and openess of the Black people around here cannot be compared to Europe. There are of course, some exceptions - but you find that everywhere. Sadly, Internet cafes are also an exception. South Africa cannot be understood unless one has seen and experienced it oneself.
