I have no idea where this should fit so I'll put it here. First of all what I mean by War songs are songs such as "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden which talk about a certain historical event. I thought It might be a good idea to find some more War Songs and see how well they describe the scene (musically and lyrically). And also how accurate they are.
I was thinking of good old military music, but since you want modern: Waltzing Matilda by The Pogues (album: Rum, sodomy & lash) Dealing with Gallipoli during WW1 But if you want a realy sad song this one is it: The last great Russian/Soviet wartime song of ww2 as it was written in the last days of war in Europe (it was off course forbidden by Soviet officials - all great songs were ) Vragi sozhgli rodnuiu khatu.mp3 (Enemies burnt home house) by Mark Bernes (record of 1945) Translated text in English and translitered Russian text originalRussian text Or if you want more graphic text (not like thet you dirty old bugger ) this one, became unofficial anthem of Soviet and now Russian tankmen: "Na pole tanki grokhotali MP3" "Tanks were rumbling on the field" sountrack from "At the war is at the war" late 1960's Translated text in English and translitered Russian text - entire with latest additions in Russian For these two one has to have some Slavic blood to realy apreciate them :smok:
Here's one of my favourites Called The Devil To Pay by Iced Earth it's the first part of a 3 song epic about the battle of Gettysburg, (each song represents one day of the battle) In July 1863 A Nation Torn In Tragedy A Trick of Fate, Two Great Armies Merge Gods Of War At Gettysburg Devastation Lies Ahead 50,000 Bodies Litter The Land Hell Rages Three Full Days The Reaper Sows, Theres The Devil To Pay The Pressures On And The Rebs Attack The Yanks Must Hold, They Cant Fall Back Just Two Brigades, 2000 Strong Against 20,000 They Cant Hold Long General Reynolds Makes His Way Expect No Mercy From The Iron Brigade Until He Shows Theyre On Their Own But Bufords Men Have A Will Of Stone Bayonets Gleam In The Morning Sun Smoke And Fire Belching From Their Guns Another Volley And Again They Strike Thousands More Comin Down The Chambersburg Pike Chorus This Tragedy And What It Brings All The Devastation *The Reaper Has His Way Men Will Kill, Blood Will Spill To Preserve The Nation *Theres The Devil To Pay South Of Town Down The Emmitsburg Road The First Corps Are Starting To Show For Bufords Men, Theyre Here Just In Time The Desperate Need To Strengthen The Line Bodies Dropping The Blue And The Grey Muskets Fire And Cannon Blaze The Union Fights Defending The Town But Theyre Outnumbered And Losing Ground From The North And The West More Rebels Arrive Thousands More And The Fight Multiplies McPhearsons Ridge And The Black Hats Strike A Rebel Sharpshooter Takes Reynolds Life Chorus This Tragedy And What It Brings All The Devastation *The Reaper Has His Way Men Will Kill, Blood Will Spill To Preserve The Nation *Theres The Devil To Pay Attack! Attack! General Lee Gives Command Theyre Overwhelmed, The Situation Demands The Federals Retreat And Rush Out Of Town But They Have Fortified And Saved The High Ground The Day Ends In Victory For The South Lees As Convinced As Gods Will Is Profound They Are Invincible And Their Cause Is Just But Longstreet Is Cautious And Lacking In Trust Across The Way The Union Digs In The Round Tops, Cemetary Ridge And Out To Culps Hill Their Lines Are Strong, No Denying Theyll Stay When The Confederates Strike Therell Be The Devil To Pay Chorus This Tragedy And What It Brings All The Devastation *The Reaper Has His Way Men Will Kill, Blood Will Spill To Preserve The Nation *Theres The Devil To Pay

Being a Brit I shouldn't really say this but I've always liked the song The Battle Of New Orleans. This is also a favourite of mine (no pun intended) - IMAGINE ME IN THE MAGINOT LINE (Gifford / Cliffe / George Formby) George Formby You should see me out in France wearing my tin hat With shot and shell it's worse than – well it's even worse than that Now imagine me in the Maginot Line Sitting on a mine in the Maginot Line Now it's turned out nice again The Army life is fine French girls make a fuss of me I'm not French as you can see But I know what they mean when they say "oui, oui" Down on the Maginot Line Now imagine me in the Maginot Line Sitting on a mine in the Maginot Line Now it's turned out nice again The Army life is fine The enemy we had to chase But my gun got out of place I went and shot the Colonel in the base Down on the Maginot Line (Ukulele Break) Now imagine me in the Maginot Line Sitting on a mine in the Maginot Line Now it's turned out nice again The Army life is fine At night, myself to sleep I sing To my old tin hat I cling I have to use it now for everything Down on the Maginot Line Now imagine me in the Maginot Line Sitting on a mine in the Maginot Line Now it's turned out nice again The Army life is fine Suddenly a pain I felt A doctor on my tummy knelt He slapped a poultice underneath my belt Right on the Maginot Line (Ukulele Break) Now imagine me in the Maginot Line Sitting on a mine in the Maginot Line Now it's turned out nice again The Army life is fine Hitler can't kid us a lot His secret weapon's tommyrot But you ought to see what the sergeant's got Down on the Maginot Line, Down on the Maginot Line.
Battle of New Orleans is a good one. IIRC, the same fella (Johnny Horton?) also done Sink the Bismark.
Yep. Plenty of BOC on my shelves. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005 ... nce&n=5174 Cool cover picture - note BOC symbol on plane. You should be able to listen to a snippet here but mine didn't work.
How about soundtracks? I always liked Russian war songs and modern soundtracks....they tend to make me feel sad
"And when we find the Bismark boy, we're gonna shut 'er down!" Yup, Johnny done both of 'em! Great to listen to!
Give me "The Trooper" of Iron Maiden. It describes the charge of the light brigade during the Crimerian War perfectly.
Can you give me any source in order to read about it? An internet website would be most preferable. Thank you!
'USA by Day' is a well known one about the constant bombardment of axis forces and supply line by the Americans (by day) and RAF (by night) Random question that came up last friday. Is vineger on your french fries originally a British thing?
