Group Build started - progression?

I finally found out the real problem I had with my build.There is a goof in the instructions.After checking out a Dragon 1/72 Jagdpanther I had previously built,I found that the Jagdtiger directions had me install a part backwards!Oh well,the build is still coming along nicely.

 

WooHoo! The StuG arrived.

 

Any progress on the StuG?

 

I'm about half way through with it.

The parts seem to have good detail for a 1/48 scale vehicle. I really like the vinyl bushings for the drive sprokets and main gun to pivot in. I do not like the tracks at all. This kit uses plastic glue together tracks and I prefer the solid molded vinyl ones. The die cast hull is also a disappointment as you can't easly modify it to make parts fit. I can't see any reason at all to have a metal hull other than as a marketing gimmick.

 

Are the tracks individual links or link and length?Indy links are a pain,but they are essential if the vehicle in question has tracks that sag such as a Tiger or Panther.

 

Good to hear you've got the Stug now! Good luck on putting it together.

 

They are several pieces but only a few are individual.

I just sprayed a bit of dullcote on the Jagdtiger.If that coat is enough,then the JT is done.As soon as I get hold of a good digital camera,I'll get some pics off to Panzerprofile for posting.I must say I am pleased with the finished product.

 

Im doing the final assembling and touch ups on the Hetzer, as they say "The Devil is in the details". Anyways, i cant wait to see everyones work,

Nice work 1950willys.I see I'm not the only one that works fast.

 

This smaller scale really lends itself to quicker builds, for me at least, To do a 1/35 kit in a couple of weeks would be inconceiveable to me (I have a tendency to want to scratchbuild and modify too much) the only mod I did on the hetzer was replace the guard for the gunsight with some brass wire, other than that its out of the box. It has been a thouroughly enjoyable build. The Stug III will most likely get started on tonight LOL

If you have the 1/48 scale Tamiya StuG, watch out for the tracks. They suck!

 

The tracks on the Hetzer went together really good, thanks in part to a jig that is built in to the sprue the tracks come on, it sets the correct radius for the individual links to wrap around the drive sprocket, Ive just noticed that the StuG does not have this feature, probably because the tops section of tracks have a "waveform" sag built into them whereas the Hetzers tracks were straight. The Hetzer tracks were the first time I have ever not had a problem with fitting individual tracks, They seem to always end up being too short or too long. But you just cant beat the realistic sag that can be achieved with the individual links, just requires a little different planning in assembly, When youve spent alot of years dealing with the vinyl one piece tracks, these individual tracks just need some getting used to.

 

A jig would have been helpful. Fortunately enough anyway, Tamiya did allow the drive sprokets to turn which was the only reason the links fit at all. I managed though.

first of all, sorry I was away for a few days. The `real life´ got me caught up a little. but I'm back now !

second, I really like the pics on the Hetzer Willys! Your camera may not be very good, I think it's good enough for the group Build. If you just make clear pics it'll be alright.

Spare tracks are, as far as I know, indeed just a matter of getting used to. One piece tracks may be easy, but not always handy ( I find them rather irritating) while the individual link tracks able you to make the tracks look more " natural". But I trust that you, with years of experience, will pick it up soon.

Well, after visiting all 3 of my 'local' modelshops I finally found a TD - a nice StuG III kit from Revell in 1/72. So far I have stuck the gun barrel into the mantlet.

The hardest part was deciding on the colour scheme. The one on the box seemed a little... boring. So I found another one in a book of mine. Only trouble is, I'll need to scratch-build the armoured skirts

Now that I am back from holiday I should get more time to work on it.

 

The Hetzer has been done for a few days now, The StuG III is ready to paint, I took several dozen pics of the Hetzer, and not a one of them turned out worth anything, even went so far as to put the cam on a tripod, and still the pics looked like really bad out of focus tourist photos, not that its a prize winning modelling achievement, but man i would at least like the pics to slightly resemble what it looks like LOL, I wonder if maybe its a lighting prob (other than the obvious crappy cam and bad cameraman), its been overcast and rainy, and the lighting in my room isnt what you would call top notch, I get far enough away for the cam to focus and the pics are very dark and detailess, too close and its just a big camoflauge blur that is shaped like a Hetzer sorta
