    Girl arrested in racism inquiry

Codie Stott was arrested for her comments
A 14-year-old girl has been arrested for allegedly making racist remarks at a school in Greater Manchester.
Codie Stott said she asked to be moved from a science group where she was with five Asian pupils - only one of whom spoke English.

The 14-year-old was questioned in a juvenile unit before being released without charge.

Harrop Fold High School, in Worsley, is investigating before deciding on what action to take.

    Racism complaint

Codie said: "I asked the teacher could I change groups because I didn't understand them and she said I was being racist and started shouting at me."

A complaint was made and she was taken to a police station.

Her mother said her Codie's jewellery and shoelaces were removed, her fingerprints and DNA samples were taken and she was put in a cell.

The school said it wanted to ensure it had a caring and tolerant attitude to pupils of all ethnic backgrounds and it did not stand for racism in any form.

Greater Manchester Police said it took hate crime reports very seriously and its treatment of the teenager was in line with normal procedure.

Wow! This is a sad state of affairs, for a number of reasons...

    1) she never said anythign that was even mildly racist, yet she was subject to obvious humiliation by being put in custody...

    2) Even if she did, being racist in ones general conduct is not a crime (i think) only in the context of workplace discrimination and assault can it be considered criminal

    3) Not sure about U.S. law but over here she would be too young to be found guilty / locked up

    4) Thousands of people all over the globe get away with much more racist remarks than that, and aren't put through the humiliating process of being arrested that this poor girl was put through

Personally I think that the ridiculous phase of political-correctness that is becoming oh-so popular is starting to seriously limit the individual's freedom of speech... No one should lock me up for my opinion no matter how biggotted and biased it may be (as long as no harm comes of it)

Remember comrades, we must never ever speak of any race, language, culture, gender, sexual preference, or class, unless it be in nothing other than full adoration and appreciation, lest we be arrested in the name of cultural sensitivity ;)

Having just read Grieg's post. My blood is boiling!!

Perhaps when I have calmed down a lot, I'll write something level headed in this thread. But right now, I'm too angry.

    Poor, poor girl.

Yeah - in case anyone didn't pick up on this - it happened in England.

To say that this is crazy or laughable would be irresponsible - there is clearly something deeply wrong when a young girl is treated like this through some sense of ULTRA political correctness bordering on fascism. Was there racism at work here - yes - hiding under a PC banner - against the poor girl who apparently is not entitled to free speech relating to a reasonable request effecting her education.

Sure, I'd want to stay in a group where I couldn't understand what anyone around me was saying!

    This is pathetic.

Is there starting to be something seriously wrong with this world or am I going crazy?
The whole idea that something likes this can happen is really disturbing.

Not the schools fault?Shouldn't the school be teaching students to speak the language they will need the most? When I was in grade school, the teachers taught students to speak the English language right away.

I find it incredible that people would live in a country and never learn the language of the land.It is the most foolish way to severely limit yourself or your children.

In Britain our reluctance to insist on USA style citizenship criteria has led to a harmful lack of integration between native and immigrant communities. As you can see, even to suggest that immigrants should all learn English may lead to an accusation of the crime of racism.

There was talk of a citizenship test....what happened to that? Although I suspect many British citizens would fail it if they had to take it......we simply don't know enough about our own country.

2nd verse of "God save our Queen".......anyone?

Which way up does the Union flag fly?

Continuing the theme of British PC gone mad...

There was a similar situation a little while ago with a newsreader on the tv - she was asked not to wear the cross in case it offended any non-Christians. Most articles on the item were filled with quotes from leaders of other religions saying 'we're not offended - why would we be offended?'

    I am so impressed!

Most people have no idea that the Union flag can be flown the wrong way up. (It is a distress signal by the way). Much less, address it by it's correct title! (Jack indeed, pah!).

    Alrighty,
For those of us who are not British, which way is proper way to fly the Union Jack?

Upside down is also used as a distress signal with the US flag.

    BTW;
    PC sucks!

David I am a mine of information.....some of it useful.....and some that satisfies the inner pedant in me. :D

For those that don't know about the Union flag (why do I keep typing onion? ) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_flag

As for Rickys link.......Some wear a cross as a fashion statement rather than a religious symbol.

It is in Belgium. One word that can be seen as offended, even in the smallest way, is enough to bring you to court. So, if Coodie said that in Belgium, the belgium "center against discirmination and for equel changes" (exept for belgians, nobody cares about the discrimination against belgians  ) can bring her to court, make a scandal about it (by saying that she's a racist, facist, nazist,.. => all the filth in the world) and start campaings (with our tax money) to make the kids aware that everybody is free to speak a language as he wants (so you don't understand their language, learn it => that's their motto)
Yep, we do have some absurd laws but it seems that the UK went one step further by locking little Coddie up in jail. that never happens here, the senteces are to light (for when you are condemt to jail for 6 monts that means that you are free as soon as the sentence is spoken. Yep, we have crowded prisons, we have to something about it and we choose for less people to be condemt to jail)

The world is becoming one f***ed up place if you ask me.

Hey, love the "God Save the Queen" thing. Who saw that one comming that you ment the Sex Pistols
