A few days ago (1 november 2006) a local museum based on Herdla, outside Bergen western Norway, raised a FW-190 in Norway! Here are the pictures of that action: http://www.luftwaffe.no/wreck/index.htm 15th Dec 1943, the plane crasced into the sea after tecnical problems, the pilot was rescued. 11th May last year, the plane was found on ca 60 meters depth after years of searching. Since the plane lies that deep, it has been untouched since the war. Interesting fact is that that it`s one of the first Fw190`s ever made. Of the ca 20000 planes made, this most likely belongs between the first 500! http://www.askoyv.no/nyhet.cfm?nyhetid=2045 http://www.bt.no/lokalt/hordaland/article310875.ece
I dunno woody...i think the waters over there at that depth are oxygen poor and that is one of the reasons the 190 was so good preserved (there is supposed to be a BV222 Wiking on the botom there as well)!
More good news for Fw 190 fans! The team that raised the Fw 190 described above has their eyes on two more they have the approximate location for and are already working on finding and raising funds for recovering the first of them.
It has several layers of paint actually. It was originally deployed with a frontline squadron in France, then a training unit in Germany, before it was deployed to Norway.
No, it has been on the bottom of the sea for some 60 years, that would mean more or less building a completely new aircraft. But it will be restored for display.
Unfortunately sea water is extremely damaging to aluminium, no aircraft raised from the sea after such a period of time is likely to be airworthy ever again without as Varyag said, being more or less completely rebuilt.
Interesting and sad story, from Serbian airforce museum was stolen Stuka dive bomber 5-6 years a go,and it was one of few that could actualy fly.Nobody know where is and how it was stolen...
http://www.white1foundation.org/sponsors.htm I have a friend that I fly with in warbirds(flightsim) who works for this foundation. They are currently restoring several 190s , One was pulled from the ocean.
LOL sinessa where ever did they find a theif that was checked out in a stuka ...theives with the skills to fly off in stolen warbirds 60 years old must be in short supplie world wide i would think..
Its great to find a plane in such great condition. Lets not hope another Facist will nick that plane. Germans machine gunning Norway. Ah, i feel better.
