I think sexual offender should get life; for both punishment and precaution.

In every single case? I'm not sure about that... What if the offender was not aware that the victim was consenting? (In rape) Or was unaware of the age of the victim when having sex with him/her? surely there should be lesser penalties for the more 'innocent' crimes.

    Stick with singapore's law then!

    haha.

Our legal system is currently undergoing some changes.

It's the death sentence for people caught alive when their crime was for forcing the hand of the government with hostages now.

And as Australians learnt recently,i am afraid the limit for drugs is still small enough to cause death to any traffickers

Surely you should just be careful what you're doing. Unaware of consent? Unaware of age? Certain things should be pretty obvious.

Not necessarily. Could you tell for sure the difference between a 15 year old girl and a 16 year old girl? Or should people ask to see a passport before engaging in such behaviour?

Personally, I think that it is all much easier if you stick to monogamy, but there you go ;)

My idea exactly... If you even have to doubt, you should know that what you're doing is wrong by default.

    As an interesting scenario...

    Girl tells boy 'I'm 16'

    Boy & Girl sleep together

Girl is actually 15, and the law finds out.

    who gets in trouble?

Logically, it should be the girl for lying, but I'd be prepared to bet it is the boy.

Isn't there a clause that states that if you lie about your age and get treated according to the lie, you have only yourself to blame?

I see how it would be difficult to prove anything in this particular situation. Which is why I prefer the following scenario:

    Girl tells boy: "I'm 16"

Boy says, "hey me too", they have a nice chat. Maybe become friends later on. Much later,

Girl tells boy: "I'm sorry, I lied to you. I'm really only 15."

Boy says, "Whatever did you lie to me for?", and they have a laugh.

    I love my dreamworld. :D

In the UK that would class as statutory rape but its a difficult one, a person at the legal age and a person six months under it look pretty much the same age.

in ca. if a girl tells a 23 yr old boy she is 18 when she is actually 17 {even if she has already had 6 or 8 lovers ) and her mom gets wind of it and wants to press charges ...the boy may find himself in a place where HE is considered the new girl in town...iF you follow my drift....

Yeah , a small age difference is tough. Well, our legal systems can be good, but not perfect.

The biggest problems I have are lack of consistency in sentencing, and leniency.

Some of you know I work in a jail. I'm known as an *sshole, because I don't kow-tow to the inmates. I give them what they are legally entitled to. I don't pass out any extra meals at chow time. I don't normally let them stay up late because "The Game" is on (I did for the World Series [c'mon, the TIGERS? That was history!!!], and I will if the Wings are in the Stanley Cup race). I don't do "nice" things for them.

As far as I'm concerned, and I've voiced this several of them, I want them to hate jail. I don't care if they hate me. I want them to be so miserable that the next time they want to do something illegal, they think of me and change their minds!

That said, I will not go out of my way to make life difficult for any of my 'charges.' I don't harass them, or anything like that. I just refuse to do things that will make jail (gaol?) life easier or more comfortable. In short, I'm a prick!

    You know the old saying:

What this country needs is more hung defendants,
    and less hung juries!

Roel, I know, I know.... I respectfully agree to disagree with your take on hanging, et al.

Actually I think the way you treat your prisoners is excellent. They should hate jail, after all. No comment from me, except kudos to you for keeping it up.
