I want to encourage the making of polls similar to those I've made about fighters and medium bombers in the aircraft forum. What about a poll for best tank year by year? I would make it myself if I had the knowledge, but I don't know when every single type of tank entered service and I'm confused about the classification of tanks.
It's better to actually discuss these things than to leave the decision to a simple and unsupported poll. After all, isn't it much more fruitful to see people offering new options and arguing their points, rather than just ticking a box and leaving it at that?
Polls often lead to discussions which is the most interesting and rewarding part, the poll itself shouldn't be taken seriously. I found it very rewarding while making the two polls in the aircraft forum just to get a better understanding of which aircraft were contemporary and to have to judge them in their rightful place in time. And it is fun!!!
A poll doesn't make any sense outside the scope of actual voting, the reason being that when voting, the poll is used for something. In topics about which tank is best, the poll will be far too rigid, and furthermore, it's not possible for the members to change their mind.
Yes, why can't you change your mind? It would be a lot more interesting if you could. The poll leads to a debate which in turn leads to people changing their vote which hopefully leads to more discussion. It would be like an election campaign. I've been involved in polls on other forums and besides being fun it's also very educational, even if it shouldn't be taken seriously.
How many administrators do you have? I thought Ricky was the boss. But Roel, I found a tank poll on page two in the quiz forum. Guess who made it?
We have three administrators, one of them (Christian) is the site owner and the other two (Ricky and myself) have been put in the position of administrator because the pevious site owner did not have time to do the daily administrating himself. In the end it's the discussion that matters, not the outcome of the poll, so why not skip the whole polling part? I made the thread you mention for another member (which I wrote in the opening post), and as you can see it was the poll itself that immediately came under discussion because it was considered too limited. Polls simply cannot serve as a substitute for a good debate.
I agree with you. And please let me know if you think I'm overdoing these polls. I'm just saying that a poll often opens up for a good debate, often a debate you would not think of to begin with without the poll. But it's my taste in doing things. This is a nice forum. And believe me, I know a fair deal about tanks, but most of what is going on in the tank forum is far too advanced for me. The aircraft forum is more on my level (I hope I don't offend anyone here ), and I know more about aircraft than I do about tanks. So I was only hoping for a less serious discussion about tanks which maybe I could take part in as well.
Get a donation for each one -- lets call it the "Poll Tax" Maybe one about the Arctic convoys -- the "North Poll" Of course, some members might get a bit upset by all this punning, and start jumping up and down doing a poll dance
Polls tend to leave things very limited in scope. I also usually find that people don't generally actually debate things in polls, they just vote then (Sometimes) comment and leave things at that. A good hypothesis on the other hand can generate pages of comments and debates (Good examples I think are Ricky's suggestions regarding the use of the Mosquito instead of the B17 as a daylight bomber, or my own comment regarding the FuGo balloons). Polls can sometimes spur a good discussion, usally though they just result in a dead end. Another six months and we can have a May Poll.
A North Pole is a person living in Northern Poland. There are also South Poles, West Poles and East Poles.
