Bummer. If this is the only river dolphin species ever to exist when humans did than double bummer.

It was indeed the only species of river dolphin.
They had also amazing senses and maneuverability even by dolphin standards.
    Plus they looked really... special.
Though wiki says they are considered practically extinct it's truly a great waste if they are, one might hope we would have learned from the Tasmanian wolf.

They said that the dolphin may have been smarter than chimps.

Shouldnt it be "Curse these interfering humans"? or have we nothing to do with the extinction?

Not entirely, extinctions have been happening for millenia before apes even thought about walking upright. Playing devil's advocate, perhaps these creatures simply failed to evolve fast enough and paid the price... ;)

Okay, but evolved to what? eating our garbage? drinking poluted water? swimming in filthy water?
Let's face it, every animal that extincts in these days, extincts because mankind is turning this planet into a waistland, and we are proud of it.
(Never thought that i would speak like that. I sound like the people from greenpeace :-? )

It appears that they are not the only species of river dolphin:
"The Irrawaddy river dolphin is classified as Orcaella brevirostris. The Amazon river dolphin is classified as Inia geoffrensis, the Indian river dolphin as Platanista gangetica, the Chinese river dolphin as Lipotes vexillifer, and the Franciscana as Pontoporia blainvillei."

Still a true shame and loss if they are gone.
