I have a catalog that sells old soviet merchandise called Sovietski...It has all sorts of stuff from flasks to coins comemmorating the Great Patriotic War. In fact there are awards like "Order of the Great Patriotic War" awarded to those who committed outstanding deeds during the conflict. I remember it being quite expensive too. Ill find the catalog tomorrow.
Hi D.R, glad somoone got usage for this posting. These prices are from Formans Guide--which is pretty current. It would be interesting to see what some of this Soviet stuff went for.
I have a medal that my mother-in-law gave me a year ago. I don't know if it's anything or if this is the appropriate place to ask (?), but for the record: it's in its original box which says, "Medal, Campaign & Service Victory World War II Stock No. 71-M-945 P.Q.D. Spec. 112-D REX PRODUCTS CORP." The medal is hanging off of a red ribbon with rainbow stripes. The front of the (bronze?) medal is a lady with a sword/knife in the left hand and a stake in the other. Her left foot is braced on an army helmet. It says "World War II". On teh back it says, "United States of America 1941-1945 Freedom from fear and want Freedom of speech and religon" I don't know if its really a WWII medal or what. She found it in an antique store and the labelling on the box is certainly representative of other authentic pieces I've received. Oh! T he medal also came with a ribbon bar like would go on the shouder of your uniform. If this doesn't interest any, you don't have to reply. I dont know if this was the place to ask these questions since I'm new on teh board. but, thanks.
It sounds like the medal awarded to those who were in the military during WWII. Hope this helps. 1. Description: The bronze medal is 1 3/8 inches in width. On the obverse is a figure of Liberation standing full length with head turned to dexter looking to the dawn of a new day, right foot resting on a war god’s helmet with the hilt of a broken sword in the right hand and the broken blade in the left hand, the inscription "WORLD WAR II" placed immediately below the center. On the reverse are the inscriptions "FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND WANT" and "FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND RELIGION" separated by a palm branch, all within a circle composed of the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1941 1945". 2. Ribbon: The ribbon is 1 3/8 inches wide and consists of the following stripes: 3/8 inch double rainbow in juxtaposition (blues, greens, yellows, reds (center), yellows greens and blues); 1/32 inch White 67101; center 9/16 inch Old Glory Red 67156; 1/32 inch White; and 3/8 inch double rainbow in juxtaposition. The rainbow on each side of the ribbon is a miniature of the pattern used in the WWI Victory Medal. 3. Criteria: The WW II Victory Medal was awarded to all military personnel for service between 7 December 1941 and 31 December 1946. 4. Components: The following are authorized components and related items: a. Medal (regular size): MIL-DTL-3943/237. Medal set with full size medal and ribbon bar. NSN 8455-00-269-5782. b. Medal (miniature): MIL-DTL-3943/237. Available commercially. c. Ribbon: MIL-DTL-11589/149. NSN 8455-00-257-0577. Available commercially. d. Streamer: The WW II Victory Medal ribbon is not used as a streamer by the Army. The Navy and Marine Corps does use the ribbon design for a streamer. 5. Background: a. The World War II Victory Medal was established by an Act of Congress on 6 July 1945 (Public Law 135, 79th Congress) and promulgated by Section V, War Department Bulletin 12, 1945. b. The medal was designed by Mr. Thomas H. Jones and approved by the Secretary of War on 5 February 1946. c. The Congressional authorization for the World War II Victory Medal included members of the Armed Forces of the Government of the Philippine Islands. It also specified the ending date would be the date of the termination of hostilities as proclaimed by the President. President Truman officially ended the state of hostilities on 31 December 1946.

Thanks! That's EXACTLY what it is! It's nice to know the significance behind it. Thanks for your input!
Hi GG, PzJgr is correct, it is the ww2 victory medal--I still have my fathers medal--somewhere. I think I even have my grandfathers medal somewhere too--but not sure.
This is the commemorative medal my grandfather received for the fighting in may 1940 in Holland. Front:
Ah, VERY nice grouping Volkbert I'd like to get my Opas stuff posted here as well--I have all of his ww2 Merchant Marine stuff--including his Mariners Medal--which were awarded only to men in the M=erchant Marines who had been wounded in combat. Its a rare medal and I think just over 5,000 were awarded.
Carl- it would be nice to see your family things also. Militaria from relatives is the best because: a) you know it's for real b) you know the story behind it
Here are some rare conmemorative medals: Tiroler Lanesdenkmünze (Tyrol Province Remembrance Medal) Awarded to all Tiroleans whos served in the First World War and also to those who, between 1915 and 1918 participated in defending the Tirol Province (amongst them were German mountain troops). This bronze gilt medal was instituted on 7 February 1928 and awards were stopped end March 1940. During that period some 120,000 were awarded. Kreigserinnerungsmedaille (War Commemorative Medal) Awarded to all who served in the First World War. This medal was instituted on 21 december 1932 and on 10 November 1933 gilt crossed swords were decreed. These were to be attached to the medal's ribbon for those who served under fire at the front, wounded and POW who had behaved with honour. Commemorative Medal of the World War. Awarded "with helmet and swords" to soldiers and other combattants or "without helmet and swords" to all other war participants or to the nearest relative of a soldier KIA. This medal was instituted on 26 May 1929 by the Regent, Admiral Hórthy.
The last one is also Hungarian. Good job on finding the Tirolean medals. I only have one which is an Austrian-Tirolean Campaign Medal from 1848--which is also my oldest piece of militaria. Maybe I should get pics done of all of them and send them to you to post Eh? Friedrich?
Alas, it will likely be a few months before I can get access to the rest of my stuff but when I do--let em know if you can post.
