Nearly 40 years ago I was posted, less than happily, from my Regular Army unit to that of the Provost Martial's, where I was, as part of my training, attached the the Royal Corp of Military Police. This was because I had previously gained a Degree in Law. This was at the time of the IRA's greatest bombing and terrorism campaign. It had then long been known that the most effective terrorist does not necessarily wear a balaklava and have an AK47 slung over his shoulder and is long haired and bearded, but is often an entirely respectable, short haired, squeeky clean, middle class white collar worker with exemplary credentials and often the best of references when applying for jobs and civil posts as Councillors, charity workers etc. As far back as the irish Civil War in the 1920's the most effective of the IRA's terrorists were those who had been sufficiently respectable to obtain post in the Revenue service, or the Civil Service, or other bona fide government agencies.

I am therefore utterly incredulous when I see senior politicians and policemen saying today that they were astounded to discover that the recent Glasgow Airport terrorists (for example) had impeccable references and were respectable middle class citizens. Worse than that is the same people's attitude that doctors could commit such awful acts against the public, given the Hippocratic Oath that doctors subscribe to !
Don't these policemen and politicians understand, as we did in the late 1960's, that respectable professional people make the very best of "sleeper" terrorists ? Do they not also realise that Islam fundamentalists will allow Muslim doctors to happily train as such and then practise medicine to the benefit of other Muslims, but at the same time conspire to blow to Hell as many infidels as they can ?

It therefore absolutely appalls me to discover that the government, intelligence agencies and the police force have appeared to have forgotten all they ever knew about fighting terrorism. Heaven Help us All !

too true bos...after reading a book about the ass kickiing the us army received in 1950 at the hands of the new and untested nk army , i asked my dad a retired us army col ...how did this fiasco happen only a few years after the crushing of the germans and japanese by the worlds best trained ,equiped and lead army in the world (im an army brat and perhaps a little biased )...anyway my dad then informed me that the us army is not a thinking and breathing organism (with a memory) ..... it is a collection of individuals ...some skilled and smart ..others less so . whose training ,funding and policy is directed by a group of elected civillian office holders or appointees who are often swept away and replaced by new guys ..with a new agenda or no agenda .the us army of 1945 was mostly at home pursueing life, liberty and happiness in suburban america ..the young occupation troops yanked out of their girlfreinds beds in japan had not fired a shot since basic training had no anti tank weapons worth a spit and were ,,,well , badly equiped, poorly trained and not very well lead...much like the british army in south africa got a lesson from the boers in basic muscketry ..the us army got a lesson in basic infantry tactics from the north koreans ...and yes bos you can no doubt safely assume that most of the anti terrorist tactics you learned in ireland 30 years ago will have to be relearned again and no they wont want any free advice or help from you..its human nature ...god help us all....

Lessons to be learned - the hard bloody way !

I quite agree, but doesn't it just break your heart ! As if that is not bad enough, last year I applied to join the branch of British Military intelligence that deals with the internal terrorist. O.K. , so I only speak Hindi as an Asian language and they wanted Urdu and Pushtu, but f--k me, wouldn't you have thought that would have been enough, what with my previous background in counter-terrorism. I didn't even get a reply to my application, just a Compliment's slip with a scrawl on it !!!

You are sure, right, amigo, about the bloody noses that those Boer's gave us Brits. 100 plus years ago,but didn't we just deserve it going to war in scarlet tunics.........at least we learned to camo up with khaki, but not soon enough !

but even more importantly , BOS , the british army learned that too much time on parade groung drill and not enough time at the rifle butts was penny wise and pound foolish ..the boers ,being mostly farmers and country boys many who shot table fare and predators at long range and from a young age ... with a frugal farmers economy in expensive cartridges , were a very nasty suprise for the brits ..the british army SOON learned its lesson and was itself a very nasty supprise for the thousands of german schoolboys it mowed down at mons and ypres in 1914 ...so fast was the rate of rifle fire from the british line that the german staff was convinced it was faceing maxims , they were not ..just plain old enfeilds IN EXPERT HANDS...

Nobody ever implied polititions (spelling, I know) were intelligent.

Makes sense to me. WW2 era spies would wear the uniforms of the enemy to avoid suspicion and detection. If you're gonna sneak around, you make your self as inconspicuous as possible. Blend in with those you're going to attack.

And in the case of terrorists, the civilian population with the best credentials you can get.

Politically, and militarily, we don't exactly have much of a chance for what we would term victory.

    "Contemtible Little Army" ? - I think not !!!!

You got that right, amigo, but even nowadays time spent drilling and bulling ( polishing one's equipment etc.) is rarely wasted, and for a number of reasons. Drill, gets soldiers to work and think as a single entity- it also helps instil a spirit of camaraderie. Bulling, gives man a pride in himself and his regiment, after all, if you look good, you feel good ! I've still got my dress uniform and even though it looks like it'd be to small for my ten year old daughter (not to mention the moth holes and claret stains on the bugger ! ), it still makes me ( a fat old baldy scrote) feel like I could take on the World and kick the Goddamn tar out of it !
As for the B.E.F., well that WAS an army and I don't think that Great Britain has ever fielded a better one. It may have been that "Contemptible Little Army", but it sure stopped the Kaiser's grey masses in their hordes. Mind you, the Lee-Enfield was a bloody good rifle and used by both Police and Army marksmen in this country LONG after even the SLR had been replaced by the SA80. In fact, I often see racks of 'em for sale in American gunshops, where they are still highly rated !
    Cheers !,

We do if our leaders use the right tactics and strategies. But given how so many of our leaders seem far more interested in partisan political squabbling than in defeating the enemy, you might well be right, I'm sorry to say.

...how ironic that the far left in europe and the usa is the most critical of the bush ,blair war on terror...the left coins words like islamiphobia and laments the (pretend ) horrors of abu gareb yet seems blind to the (very real }horrors of the wretched theocracys of islamic intolerance ..but in a future world which the likes of osama and amadmanjihadist strive for ,the non religious ,womans rights ,free love hippies of the far left would be the very first to feel the sword on their necks ..the conservative religious right are at least "people of the book "when the us pulls out of the failed attempt of nation building in iraq the lefties and the jihadists will both applaud ..when koranic law rules in europe in some 30 or 40 years hence as it must by sheer weight of islamic births in those places ,perhaps then the lefties will rise from their slumber and smell the coffee ...and hear for whom the bell tolls...

What actions of the Iranian PM lead you to decide him worthy of the label "amadmanjihadist"?

He hasn't declared a Jihad or engaged in any acts of terroristm AFAIK

..you mean personaly ,smeg ? ...he seems quite bent on building a nuke and has said he intends when complete to use it forthwith to finnish the holocaust which he claims ,btw ,never happened ..now i know you smeg and some other members dont think he said that or he was just kidding if he did but the israelies and everyone else in the western world thinks he did say it and must be taken seriously ..not to mention his ties to hezbolla ,iraq and afganistan sculdugery..smeg why is it you seem to think this guy is the new jefferson or gandi of iran when everone else thinks he is more akin to himmler or eichman ..i mean , farsi is not some ancient lost language of antiquity ..i dont speak it but lottsa people do world wide , many thousands right here in the bay area ..his speaches are not in code nor are they held in secret sound proof offices ..if you wait 2 weeks he will say it all again ..of course muslim leaders spewing and ranting about killing every man ,woman ,child and housepet in israel or the usa is not really newsworthy ,you are correct , but when they have a nuke or are building one , well thats a different matter ,no?..his mein kampf spiel is quite well recorded and documented ..if its all just a practical joke ..its not a very funny one...

It is fault of israel actualy. Not the Arabs,Jews need to get on "softer" aproach to get stability on the region. It is simple count.Average Israel family got 2 kids....average arab family got 8 kids....Basicly soon enought israel will be drained by the wars, but not the Arabs. So why Arabs dont bomb France for exsample? Why is primary target on US,Israel and UK? Coz of foreign politic of that countrys. U cant kill them all,and u can newer protect the civilians from terrorist attacks.Maybe that foreign politic is not so good? It is alot hate in the world to US ,Israel and UK and with good reasons. For exsample, when Israel invaded Lebanon, UN wanted to judge that action by declaration. US veto it. Classic military act of agression was put on veto. So how will arab react on that? With terroirsm.

...i agree , sinessa ...the jews are always ranting aboat how they want to destroy the ape pig arabs and push them all into the sea,,except for the pretty young arab girls ..of course ...these will be spared ,,,for a while...
a tiny industrious ,democratic ,peaceloveing arab enclave surrounded on all sides by bile spewing hate filled zionist pig men ...arabs controll less than 1 % of all the land mass in the entire middle east but the jews wish to take even that away from them ..all the arabs wish for is to be left alone in peace on there tiny strip of arid dirt ...but no ..the oil rich zionists in the teeming millions attack again and again
..in 46 ,56 ,67 ,73 the tiny muslim nation has struggled against teeming bloodthirsty hoardes of hebrews , attacking from all sides ..and now we have the suicide bomber jews , the rabbis tell these guilable young men they go straight to heaven if they die killing arab goyim , so sad ...will these endless biggoted attempts at ethnic cleansing of the hapless minority arabs never cease? the mindless jews kneel and pray 5 times daily bobbing like robots their minds locked to all but the the great torah , pointing their craven heads towards miami .. the torah actually intructs them to kill the arab unbelivers ..even the trees and bushes will call out ...come here !! there is an arab hideing behind me ,quick ...come kill him !!!.....the jews belive that the whole world will one day be subject to strict kosheric law ..oy vey !!!..we can only hope the tiny arab population will not be crushed by the teeming masses of brainwashed jewery ..

Perhaps not, sinissa, but he does have a valid point. The Arabs have, since 1947, tried time and again to annihilate Israel. And you can argue that Israel was wrong to invade Lebanon, but I wonder why you do not say anything about Lebanon harboring Hezbollah terrorists, whose attacks on Israel led to the invasion in the first place. And I wouldn't place any bets on Israel going under, if I were you; the Jewish state is here to stay, according to the Bible, destined to play a major role in the last days.

...yes the poor tiny arab nation weary of liveing in constant combat readiness for 60 years would love to sit down and talk ,to make peace and live normal lives ..the zionists will first have to admit the right of the arab people to exist at all...the small arab state is a democracy ,is hard working ,educated ,prosperous and tolerant ...the judeofaciests hate them for it and are blind to all but their rabid hate filled rabbis and their brutAL TORAH ...the arabs fear the day fast approaching when one of the militant jewish states has the bomb ..as the jewish theocracys leaders are not shy about blathering bile and hate on pubic loadspeakers about what they intend to do to the tiny arab state. they teach even their small children to hate the arabs who they claim are descended from swine ...if only we could get these hate filled zealot jews to the table for peace talks ...is there any hope?

Yes CSP, I think Woody may be engaging in just a touch of sarcasm there. Or maybe it was only the effects of the two four he had just finished!
