I have a picture of a Morris AC9, and on the front mudguard there is a white (or pale) S on a dark rectangular (portrait) background. The photo is likely to be late 1941. I suspect the AC9 belonged to the K.D.G or 11th Hussars. What does the symbol mean/signify? And can we identify the background colour?
I'll try later, with a little help from my son. We've got a scanner, and I've been shown how to use it, but that was over a year ago!
Sorry guys, just didn't get the time with Will last night. Will do what I can, and see if I can't get an image to you for the weekend. David.
Davids Pic Here's Davids photo, (bottom Pic) don't think it's one of ours (KDG) as they had Marmon Harringtons at first in North Africa.
I know comparing shades of grey and trying to guess the original colour is a fool's game, but it looks a very similar shade to the marking on the door, which was white-red-white. I would therefore guess that the badge was a white 'S' on a red background.
there is a picture of an A9 from the the HQ 32 Army TK Bde from Nov 41 in one of my ospreys with that white, red, white marking. But that is followed by a Matilda of 4 RTR, 32 Army Tank Bde and a Matilda from 42 RTR 1 Army Tk Bde. Plus a stuart from 4th Light Armd Bde, 7th Arm Div. But all four are Nov 41 which suggests they could be opperation markers? FNG
Well, this site - http://www.fireandfury.com/britinfo/divmarkings.pdf - claims that the front-left bumper badge on armoured cars was for the Corps or Army badge. However I can't find any examples of a Corps or Army badge!
Ok, the opperation was Crusader, so that gives us an order of battle and a time frame. There can't be many units at that point equiped with AC's. FNG
That's good info. It's just a shame that none of the relevent Corps or Armies symbols was an "S". Let's keep digging, at least we are getting somewhere.
Thanks Merlin! For conveniance, I will just paste it here: Thanks again to Merlin for contacting Bovvie and sending on their response.
