I thought it was funny, a bit repetetative at times perhaps, but still funny. And I wasn't offended by the Norwegian entry. It's even true, we don't have any world famous brands, but why should I be offended.

Or he's considered funny because he's popular? How can you consider trotting out tired old cliches as being a break from mainstream humour? I really don't see him being American as an issue, I only thought of what you quoted as Canadian humour because yourself, a Canadian posted it. I actually like North American humour on the whole and that is what I find quite dissappointing with this, North American comedians can easily do so much better than this tripe. Having grown up laughing at Beavis and Butthead I really wouldn't consider what is popular with high schoolers as a good gauge of what is good comedy so please don't patronise me with the "You're just too old to get it" line.

To be honest, I didn't really find it particularly offensive, I seem to have found myself being dragged into the trap of being offended because I should. It's just boring, I've heard practically every one of these dozens of times over the last couple of decades and they're less funny now than the first time round. I can't honestly think of anything less mainstream than the old "English-Dentist-Bad-LOL" line. Please, if this guy is so "not-mainstream", a: he wouldn't have had a cameo on Fox's Futurama, b: he would have come up with something a bit sharper and more up to date than this. I use the UK example because this is the one I can most closely relate to.

I can only assume from how highly you rate him that his usual material is much more original than this.

    Let's see now -

I suffer from a similar condition to your "people who don't laugh at my favourite jokes have no sense of humour syndrome" - it's the "women who don't fancy me are lesbians syndrome" - hell of a lot of them round where I live.

I don't respond well to this because I've heard it all before, depressingly in many cases for the first time before you were even born.

I am older, next year I turn 30, next year you're around 20 IIRC.

    For what it's worth this:

Is just as patronising as saying:

I've seen it before, I've heard it before. It wasn't really funny back then when I wasn't older and even when you factor in repitition and age it still isn't funny. I didn't think it was that great back when I was 18 and yes I heard this stuff back then, in some cases almost word for word, so I really can't consider age that huge a factor.

I can accept that this doesn't necessarily cast O'brien in the greatest light and that maybe 20 year old cliches aren't the best example of what passes for "Non-Mainstream" comedy, but please don't pull out "I'm younger and you just don't get it because you're old". Part of the reason I'm objecting to this humour is because the jokes themselves are as old in some cases as you are. Overall I should respond well to jokes that were originally coined nearly twenty years ago, because I can remember them being used back when they had some claim to originality.

He won an emmy, btw and comedians have said he is superior to his rivals in a serious manner.

Im just saying maybe the humour dosent connect with you. His humour connects more with people my age, allthough not restricted to it.

For what it's worth, I laughed. Simon, by getting offended and replying you already lost. Just move on. Some battles cannot be won :)

Here's the thing though, I really wasn't offended by it and as Lonewolf said, I'm not trying to win anything. (Although I seem to have got sidetracked into seeming offended simply by arguing that this isn't great comedy).

I scrolled through the list looking for the UK's entry hoping to find something provocative and funny and what was there? Disappointingly the good old standby, it was probably a coin toss to decide whether to go with that or go down the "English food sucks" line. I couldn't get offended because there was no real effort or thought put into it. The rest of the entries that I read through seem in a similar vein.

Look, I'll freely admit I know little about this guy, maybe it is just a case that it's not my sense of humour. There are plenty of good comedians and good comedy that I avoid like the plague simply because they're not my humour either.

Maybe if I get a spare evening I'll spend a bit of time on youtube et al and look him up (If there's anything on there that you think is good, by all means recommend it), maybe his usual stuff is funnier and more original than this, but there really seems little that is more safe and mainstream than lazily regurgitating antiquated cliches, and as so far this is all I really have to form a judgement all I can really do is form an opinion on this piece.

Let's face it, most of the posters on here could have come up with a similar list with minimal effort.

Just because he's popular doesn't necessarily mean a great deal either, tabloid newspapers are popular but have limited value.

Anyway, I'm done with this unless anyone's got anything new to add and I really don't see much merit carrying on going round the houses on this one.

That stereotype is still funny over here, maybe not in the UK, though.

He evoked a reaction, a negative one which was half the point, lol

I don't know if this is the place to admit it, but I thought some of them were rather hilarious, even if the stereotypes used are all as old as Methusalem... The one about the Netherlands - I couldn't agree more.
