This is my problem I am trying to write a condensed unit history for the 69th Medical Depot Company. Something that I can submit to a CBI website. Up till the time I started there was no information on this unit and now all there is is information that I have found and submitted. The unit consists of three platoons all three platoons were activated in June 1944 the first and second platoons were flown over the hump to Kunming from India in Sept of 44 and were on an army map as of Oct 13,1944. The 3rd storage and issue platoon was activated at the same time as the other two but was stationed at Balijan Assam until June of 45 when they left Ledo by convoy arriving at Kunming by July 10,45. My father was with the 3rd platoon and on his DD-214 his platoon received 1 campaign credit and that was Central Burma. I am trying to find if the first two received any? I have looked this Unit up on two online army websites they are never listed never existed this makes it very hard. I am working with Golden Arrow Research and Collage Park Fort Knox and the National Archives very little at this point. And nobody has any insite on the Meritorious Unit Citation that the unit received on September 1,1945 information on the general order does not exist. Seems like this perticular unit is part of something bigger then the company size it represents and I believe that any information will be listed under that unit possibly Hq,SOS,CT I just don't know nor does anyone else.
Geoff the lead researcher at Golden Arrow research seems to think the reason the unit is not listed with the Fort Benning list and another army unit list on the internet is that it was never an independent unit but part of Hq SOS,CT and not on its own .How to find out more on this I would not know. I wish I could find other non combatant army units from SOS, that received The Meritorious Unit Citation in the China Theater on Sept1,1945 for the time period Oct 44-July31,1945.
. I also wondered if anybody could answer another question I have? As I have mentioned before the 69th Medical Depot Company was made up of three platoons 1st and 2nd Storage & Issue Platoons and The Hq &3rd Storage and Issue Platoon. Why is the 3rd platoon called the Hq & Storage and Issue Platoon and what does the title mean? Why Hq?
Because HQ was actually the Headquarters of the CT CC (Chinese Training and Combat Command). There were atleast 2 headquarters, possibly 3. The first one was at Ramgarh, India and called the Ramgarh Training Center (RTC). That's where Americans trained, fed, and supplied Chinese for battle against the Japanese. There was medical staff there as well. If I remember correctly, the second headquarters which did the same thing, was in China where your dad was. I obviously paid the most attention to RTC. Some of the medical teams were attached to units and took care of them in battle. They either stayed at HQ or went along the road with CT CC,, or to area hospitals, etc.
These headquarters were secret at the time. Not sure when they became known. I've even read where the CBI medical staff was not required to keep records at a certain point in time. It was ordered in 1944 or 1945. Sorry, I can't remember where I read this. Just came across it when researching my dad. If he was attached to the ct cc, He may have been awarded something under one of their unit names? Dad was an instructor not medical, but I come across medical info every once in a while. Hope this helps.
The Hq & 3rd Storage and Issue Platoon was activated at Chubua Assam on June 10,1944 before this date my father was attached to the Medical Detachment No.2 MD (Supply) this unit was disbanded on the same date. The unit was on route to Kunming in late June of 44 arriving at Kunming on July10,1945. I know there was two Hqs in CBI this unit seemed to be in both theaters meaning they were under the control of both Hqs at different times. Who would have issued MUC seeing the unit received theirs in Sept 45.
Was also wondering were your father was throughout the war? How did he avivive at Kunming by air or land convoy and what campaign credits did he and his unit receive?
The Medical Depot Company consisted of a Headquarters Detachment and three numbered Storage and Issue platoons. Your father was with a group that included the Hq (Headquarters Detachment) and the 3d Storage and Issue Platoon, but "Hq & 3d Storage and Issue Platoon" was not its designation. Do you see the distinction?
You seem to be very well informed was wondering if you can help me on this question? I am trying to find information on General Orders? I am interested in finding information on a General Order that was issued for the period of October 44 through July 31,1945 dtd Sept 1,1945 Hq,SOS,CT. Can you look through a book of General Orders for that time period or for SOS. Any help would be appreciated.
Just saw this. I'm about to head out the door. Will try and find something for you when I get home. I forgot, please tell me his name and state.
I'm still digging. I did come across an interesting diary of Col. Tamaz, chief admin of all medical activities in the CBI. Here is a link in case you haven't seen it, Office of Medical History
Here is a link to that includes the Central Burma and China Offensive General Orders. For some reason, my IPAD does not want to load it today. It is huge and includes other campaigners as well. I'll try again later. http://www.benning.army.mil/library...nze Star, Soldiers Medal, Legion of Merit.pdf
I am helping more than one person and some times don't keep things straight. I am also blonde. So pardon my faux pas. Lol
Unfortunately the two army websites that mention campaign credit and participation for units that served in WW2 the 69th is never mentioned never existed by these lists.
I am thinking he was attached to a unit that received credit, so while his unit wasn't listed directly, it was included. I hope I explained that correctly. I was trying to go through the units to see which one he was probably attached to, but my IPAD wasn't cooperating. Edited to add, some one please correct me if my thinking is off. But if he received the award, he HAD to be in or attached to a listed unit.
